Check Add-Ons Are Coming to Gmail
Gmail is about to become much more flexible, as Google has announced that “add-ons” will be rolled out to the email service by the end of the year.
Currently available in developer preview form, Google claims that these “Accessories” will be Integrated application scripts using a newly designed “card” system which allows developers to combine different UI components. On top of that, developers would only need to build their integration once as these plugins would run natively both on the web version of Gmail as well as the Gmail application for Android and iOS.
In terms of execution, the plugins for Gmail seem to work very similar to add-ons for other Google apps like Docs. For the web version of Gmail, clicking on an installed plugin will cause the said plugin to appear on the right side of the screen. For Android and iOS devices, these plugins will open a new window on your devices. Also, users will only need to install these plugins once before you can access them through the web and mobile device platforms.
As add-ons for Gmail are currently in development, there are only three functional add-ons available for those who have access to the developer preview. The first is “Intuit QuickBooks”, a plugin that allows users to generate and send invoices, as well as confirm the status of invoices from Gmail.
The second is “ProsperWork”, a plugin that checks the contact information for people in email threads against the information stored in your Customer relationship management system (CRM). The third is “Sales force”, a plugin that allows users search for existing contacts, add new ones, and associate email threads with one or more existing opportunities in Salesforce.
No timeline has been provided on when the plugin for Gmail will be released, but Google has mentioned that all Gmail users you will be able to install add-ons through the G Suite Marketplace later this year.
