Two new updates are available for Mac users to increase security and control the operation of the Java web plug-in in the Safari web browser. Named for Java OS X 2021-003 and Safari 6.0.4 (or Safari 5.1.9 for earlier versions of OS X), updates are available right now via Software Update  from the Apple menu. Updates combine to approximately 110 MB and require Safari to be closed before installation, although no restart is required, and should be considered mandatory updates to existing software for those using Safari and / or a Java file on a Mac.

After installation, you’ll find a new security option in Safari that makes it easier to disable the Java service and also gives you more control over Java program management, which gives website-specific access to the plug-in with four different security settings for how and when Java can run.

Fine-tune Java drivers by website in Safari for Mac OS X.

The first time you visit a website that is trying to use a Java program, you will be prompted to allow or block the execution of the Java application. Regardless of the option selected, a site that attempts to use a Java program is then added to the access list, which can later be manually adjusted as follows:

  • Drag down the Safari menu, click Settings, and then click the Security tab
  • Click Manage Website Settings to access the new Java Security Panel
  • A list of sites that have tried to use Java appears in this list, and there is a submenu next to the URL that shows the status of the Java plug-in for that site.
  • Click the submenu to change Java permissions by website: Ask before use, Always block, Allow, Always allow

Safari Java Options

Apple explains the four options as follows:

Ask before use: Safari provides the option to block or allow the Java network plug-in. If a Java update is available, Safari will prompt you to download the latest version.

Always block: Safari displays the text “Blocked plug-in” instead of Java web plug-in content. Click Blocked Plug-in to see the option to block or allow the Java Web Plug-in for that website.Allow: Websites configured to allow can use the Java network plug-in as long as the installed version of Java does not have known critical security issues. If a Java update is available, Safari will prompt you to download the latest version.

Always allow: The Java Web Plug-in works without Safari prompts. This setting is only recommended for trusted websites that require the Java network plug-in, such as websites that can only be accessed on the corporate intranet.

This is a great way to manage Java applications for very specific needs without going into everything and disabling it completely in OS X. Many users need Java for banking sites and intranets, so you can now effectively add those sites to your whitelist for Java access while easily blocking the rest of the plug-in.

Java is often the primary attack vector for malware and Trojans affected by OS X, and therefore it’s pretty easy to prevent a lot of malware from entering your Mac by following strict Java usage rules, making the update even more important for all users.
