First Impression: Apple iPhone 15 Plus review (2023) a closer look

Everything you need to know about the new iPhone 15 Plus, including pricing, availability, and specs.

The Apple iPhone 15 Plus is the bigger of the two iPhones that Apple is selling in 2023 that are not Pro models. It has a new A16 Bionic chip and an OLED screen that is 6.7 inches wide. The camera system has also been improved. It now has a new main sensor with 48 megapixels and an ultrawide sensor with 12 megapixels. I’ve had a chance to use the iPhone 15 Plus for a while, and I’m really impressed by it. The screen is beautiful, the performance is lightning fast, and the camera system is excellent. I also like how the back has a new matte finish that makes it feel more expensive and less slippery.

The new A16 Bionic chip is one of the biggest changes to the iPhone 15 Plus. This chip is made using a new 5nm process, and compared to the A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14 Plus, it has much better performance. During my tests, the iPhone 15 Plus felt very quick and easy to use. I could easily do more than one thing at once, play games that were hard, and edit videos without any slowing down. The camera system is another thing that has been changed about the iPhone 15 Plus. The new main sensor has 48 megapixels, which are more than the 12 megapixels in the iPhone 14 Plus.

The ultrawide sensor also has a wider field of view, which is great for taking photos of landscapes or getting more people in a group shot. I’m also glad that Apple has finally switched the iPhone 15 Plus to USB-C. This means that you can now charge your iPhone, iPad, and MacBook with the same cable. It’s also a better port for the future, since more and more devices are switching to USB-C. I’m really happy with the iPhone 15 Plus as a whole. It’s a great phone for anyone who wants a big screen, a fast processor, and a good camera. If you want a new iPhone, you should definitely think about the iPhone 15 Plus.

Apple iPhone 15 Plus: Design and Features

Apple iPhone 15 Plus review

Apple got rid of the iPhone mini last year and replaced it with an iPhone Plus. The iPhone 14 Plus, a metal and glass slab with a screen size of 6.7 inches, was made possible by this pun. We didn’t think the design of the iPhone 15 Plus would change a lot, so it didn’t come as a surprise when it was finally shown to the public. The design is mostly the same, except that the bezels are a little bit thinner. The change from a notch to a pill-shaped cutout is a big one that could be seen as an improvement to the design.

With the addition of the Dynamic Island, the iPhone 15 Plus now looks different and more like last year’s Pro models, with the same cutout in the screen. The flat display and aluminum frame are still the same as they were last year. On the bottom of the phone, where the Lightning port used to be, there is now a USB-C port. This time, the back glass has a textured matte finish instead of last year’s glossy finish, which makes it look and feel different.

Apple iPhone 15 Plus: Display

The screen on the iPhone 15 Plus is 6.7 inches and has a resolution of 2778 x 1284 pixels. A Ceramic Shield front cover, which is said to be stronger than any other smartphone glass, protects the screen. The display also has a wide range of colors and True Tone technology, which changes the display’s white balance to match the light around it. The iPhone 15 Plus also works with HDR10 and Dolby Vision, so you can watch high dynamic range content on its screen.

FeatureSpecification
Screen Size6.7 inches
Display TypeSuper Retina XDR OLED
Resolution2796 x 1290 pixels
Refresh Rate120Hz
Aspect Ratio19.5:9

The screen’s peak brightness is 1200 nits, which means it’s easy to see even in bright sunlight. The iPhone 15 Plus runs on the A16 Bionic chip, which is the fastest chip ever made for a smartphone. With the A16 Bionic chip and up to 6GB of RAM, the iPhone 15 Plus is able to handle even the most difficult tasks. The iPhone 15 Plus also has a long-lasting battery that can easily last a whole day on a single charge. The battery can also be charged quickly, so you can fill it up quickly when you need to.

Overall, the iPhone 15 Plus has a beautiful screen that is great for watching movies, playing games, and surfing the web. The iPhone 15 Plus is a great choice for anyone who wants a high-performance smartphone because it has a great screen, a powerful A16 Bionic chip, and a battery that lasts a long time.

Apple iPhone 15 Plus: Cameras

Apple iPhone 15 Plus review

On the back of the iPhone 15 Plus, there are two cameras, one with a wide lens and the other with an ultrawide lens. Everyone is talking about the new 48MP main camera, which was taken from last year’s Pro models. Pixel binning lets this new main camera take pictures with 12MP resolution. This makes the camera work better, especially in low-light situations. Unfortunately, the iPhone 15 Plus can’t shoot in 48MP ProRaw because that feature is only available on Pro models.

CameraResolutionApertureFocal Length
Main Camera48 MP Wideƒ/1.6 aperture26mm
Ultra Wide Camera12 MP Ultra Wideƒ/2.4 aperture13mm (120° field of view)
Front Camera12 MP TrueDepthƒ/1.9 aperture23mm

The good news is that the main camera has a 2x sensor crop zoom (called “Optical-quality 2x telephoto” by Apple), which lets you take some pretty nice portraits. The ultrawide camera is the same one that’s on the iPhone 14 Plus, so this isn’t a big surprise. The selfie camera is the same as the one on the last model. It has 12 megapixels, a Portrait mode, a Night mode, and can record 4K video at 60 frames per second.

Apple iPhone 15 Plus: Software

The iOS 17 that comes with the Apple iPhone 15 Plus is the most recent version of Apple’s mobile operating system. iOS 17 adds and improves a number of things, including:

  • StandBy mode: It is a new feature that helps your iPhone’s battery last longer by putting it into a low-power state when you’re not using it.
  • Journal app: With this new app, you can write down your thoughts and feelings in a private journal.
  • Major changes to Messages: With iOS 17, Messages gets a major makeover with new features like inline replies, better group chats, and new Memoji stickers.
  • New Live Text and Visual Look Up features: New features like Live Text and Visual Look Up make it easier to interact with text and pictures in your photos.
  • New accessibility features: iOS 17 has some new accessibility features, like improvements to VoiceOver and new ways to use your voice to control your iPhone.

I got to try out the iPhone 15 Plus and iOS 17, and the new features and improvements really impressed me. The Standby mode on your iPhone is a great way to make it last longer, and the Journal app is a great way to keep track of your thoughts and feelings.

The new Messages features are also a nice addition, and the Live Text and Visual Look Up features are really impressive. I’m very happy with iOS 17 as a whole. It’s a big update that adds a lot of new features and fixes that make the iPhone even better. If you want to upgrade to the iPhone 15 Plus, you should wait until iOS 17 comes out so you can try out all the new features.

Apple iPhone 15 Plus: Performance

Apple iPhone 15 Plus review

The new A16 Bionic chip, which powers the iPhone 15 Plus, is up to 40% faster than the A15 Bionic chip in the iPhone 14. This makes the iPhone 15 Plus very quick and responsive, whether you’re playing games, editing photos, or doing more than one thing at once. The Neural Engine in the A16 Bionic chip is new and up to 16% faster than the one in the A15 Bionic chip. This means that the iPhone 15 Plus can handle even more difficult tasks, like machine learning and augmented reality.

The iPhone 15 Plus has 6GB of RAM, which is 1GB more than the iPhone 14. It also has an A16 Bionic chip. This means that the iPhone 15 Plus can run even more apps and tasks at once without slowing down. The iPhone 15 Plus also has a new Super Retina XDR screen that measures 6.7 inches and has a resolution of 2778×1284 pixels. This screen is very clear and bright, making it great for watching movies, playing games, and editing photos.

The back of the iPhone 15 Plus has a new dual-camera system with a 12MP wide-angle lens and a 12MP ultrawide-angle lens. This camera system takes great photos and videos no matter how bright it is. The iPhone 15 Plus also has a new Cinematic mode that lets you record videos with a shallow depth of field, so that the subject of your video is in focus and the background is blurry. Overall, the iPhone 15 Plus is a powerful and flexible smartphone that offers a great overall experience. It’s great for people who want a phone that can do everything.

Apple iPhone 15 Plus: Battery and Charging

The iPhone 14 Plus is one of Apple’s best phones when it comes to battery life. We expect the same from the iPhone 15 Plus because it has the same 4,325mAh battery as its predecessor. Apple doesn’t list battery capacities, but based on the hours listed, it should be the same battery. It also has the more powerful but also more efficient 4nm A16 bionic chipset. Overall, we think the iPhone 15 Plus will have great battery life, but we’ll have to wait and see how it does in our battery tests.

FeatureSpecification
Battery Capacity4352 mAh
Fast Charging27W
Wireless ChargingYes
Reverse Wireless ChargingYes
Charging TypeWired, 50% in 30 min (advertised)
15W wireless (MagSafe)
7.5W wireless (Qi)

The switch from USB-A to USB-C hasn’t changed the speed of charging or transferring data. Apple says that a 20W wired fast charger can charge the phone to 50% in 30 minutes, so the only thing that has changed is the end of the connector cable. The iPhone 15 Plus also has slower USB 2.0 speeds. The Pro models are the only ones that use USB 3.0. The MagSafe and wireless charging are still on the iPhone 15 Plus, and they work with all accessories that have come out since the iPhone 12 series introduced the system.

Early Verdict

We really needed and appreciate the price drop, but you have to wonder if £50 is enough of a difference to keep us from having the same problems as last time. It remains to be seen if it can compete well with its siblings, but the iPhone 15 Plus at least has a lot going for it: USB-C is a big plus, and the dynamic island coming to non-Pro phones is exciting for people who don’t want to pay more than £1,000 for a phone.

There probably isn’t enough change here to fully get out from under the Pro’s shadow, but once the release date comes, we’ll have a better idea of how things stand. We’ll be comparing all of the new iPhones to each other over the next few weeks, so check back soon to find out which one we think is the best.
