Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge review (2023) great features

It's thin, but offers a sound that can rival speakers three times its size.

The Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge is now on sale and costs £669 in the UK. Customers in the U.S. will have to pay $899, while those in Australia will have to pay AU$1449. That’s for the gold tone finish on our review sample. When it first came out, there was a cheaper black anthracite option (£539, $699, or AU$1199), but that’s no longer an option. The Beosound Emerge from Bang and Olufsen is a bookshelf speaker that looks like a hardcover book. But don’t let the size fool you.

Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge: Description

It’s one of those speakers that will surprise you with how well it sounds for how small it is. Most bookshelf speakers are just square or rectangular boxes with grilles on the front. But the Beosound Emerge is made to fit in with your living room or bedroom’s high-end style. B&O paid a lot of attention to the little things, and it shows. Even though the company’s other products aren’t known for being good deals, the Beosound Emerge is. If you’re looking for a bookshelf speaker, here’s what you need to know about it.

Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge: Design

Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge review

There are a lot of wireless speakers that say they are bookshelf speakers, but the Beosound Emerge takes the name seriously. It’s made to look like a big, expensive book, but it’s still a book. Bang & Olufsen says that its small size and ability to spread sound in 180 degrees make it perfect for small spaces. Like a shelf for books.

The Emerge is made of materials that are about as good as you’d expect from the brand. The combination of rose gold pearl-blasted aluminum, natural oak, and the common Kvadrat acoustic cloth gives this speaker a luxurious look, and it also feels good to the touch. The brand logo that runs up the speaker’s back is a clever touch. When it comes to build quality and finish, the story is just as predictable. The Emerge is made with a lot of care and professional pride for the details.

Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge: Features

The Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge is a great audio device with a beautiful design and a lot of great features. It adds a touch of sophistication to any room with its slim, tower-like shape and fabric finish. One thing that makes it stand out is that it has great sound quality. The Beosound Emerge has a powerful 120W audio output and speakers with a 4″ woofer and two 1.45″ full-range drivers. This setup makes sure that there is a wide range of frequencies, from 39 Hz to 22,000 Hz, so that rich, detailed sound can be played back.

The Beosound Emerge has Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Bluetooth 5.2 for connectivity, so you can stream music from your favorite devices wirelessly. It works with many different audio formats, like MP3, WMA, AAC, FLAC, WAV, ALAC, AIFF, and Ogg Vorbis, so it can be used with many different audio sources. It also has a 3.5mm aux-in port and a USB Type-C port for connecting to wired audio sources.

Popular streaming services like Spotify, Deezer, and TuneIn also work well with the Beosound Emerge, though this may depend on where you live. The 1.8-inch OLED touchscreen display makes it easy to control your music. It also makes it easy to navigate and control playback.

Also, the Beosound Emerge has built-in support for voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. This makes it easy to use the device without using your hands and gives you access to a lot of voice-activated features and services. If you want to set up sound in more than one room, the Beosound Emerge works with other Bang & Olufsen products and lets you play music in every room at the same time.

Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge: Performance

Bang and Olufsen Beosound Emerge review

The B&O Beosound Emerge has a 101mm bass driver with 60W class D power, a 37mm mid-range driver with 30W class D power, and a 15mm tweeter with 30W class D power. The Bang & Olufsen control app lets you tune the speaker to your liking with graphic EQ.

B&O doesn’t say what codecs they offer, and we could only test with SBC and AAC. You also get Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Chromecast apps. Also, you can use the app to stream music from Bang & Olufsen Radio, which I didn’t use much. It works with Google Assistant and Google Home, so adding it to my living room in the Home app was simple. You can play music on the Emerge using both Bluetooth and WiFi.

Even though the cabinet is thin, the sound is anything but. It makes sounds that you would expect from a speaker three times its size. The lower limit frequency of the Beosound Emerge speaker is set to 45 Hz, which makes for good bass. My Marshall Stanmore 2 doesn’t have bass like that, but it still sounds good. Even so, it can still shake your furniture. Even though it has a range of 45Hz to 22kHz, the Emerge does well at the points where different frequencies meet.

Both male and female voices sound natural and don’t tend to be too high-pitched, which can sometimes be hard to listen to. we could hear the guitar tunes in the middle of the drum beats in the pop/rock songs by Strings, which is my favorite band.

The Beosound Emerge can get loud enough to fill a big room. we have been using it as my main speaker with my projector when we can also use the Sonos Ray soundbar with the Sub Mini connected to my OnePlus Q2 Pro TV. we noticed that going from 80% volume to 100% volume doesn’t make a big difference, but going from 60% volume to 80% volume does.

Final Words

Most of the time, Bang & Olufsen products are easy to put down by pointing out how much more expensive they are than similar products from almost any other company. The Beosound Emerge doesn’t let you do that, and it has a lot more going for it than just a reasonable price. So, for once, here’s a Bang & Olufsen product that can compete everywhere. If you have ever wanted a piece of the Bang & Olufsen pie, you could do a lot worse than this.

FAQs

What is better Bang and Olufsen or Harman Kardon?

The Harman/Kardon Onyx Studio 6 is not as good as the Bang & Olufsen Beosound Explore. The Beosound Explore is easier to carry around and is better made. It has an IP67 rating for resistance to dust and water, but we don’t test for this.

Which is better Bose or Bang and Olufsen?

Both the Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 Gen 2 and the Bose SoundLink Revolve are speakers with very similar sound quality. Depending on how you listen, you might like one better than the other. The Bose lasts longer on a single charge. But the voice assistant on the Bang & Olufsen works better.
