Beats Powerbeats Pro in just $179.99 at Best Buy

The three things every music-listening athlete looks for in a pair of headphones are comfort, a secure fit, and long battery life. With the boom in wireless technology in recent years, you can add secure-fitting earbuds and not even a cable tendril to that list.

The Beats Powerbeats Pros have all of these features, as Beats has redesigned its existing sports-focused Powerbeats into wireless headphones for runners and gym-goers. The previous model’s cable, which fell off the earbuds and wrapped around the neck, is completely gone.

In terms of design, the Powerbeats Pro are unmistakably in line with parent company Apple. They come in a chic black charging case that’s easy to open and close. It’s solid, sleek, and thanks to the magnetic closure, it can’t accidentally open and let the earbuds fall out.

As we’ve come to expect, the case also doubles as a charger, and the headphones themselves magnetically plug into their electrical contacts. With a full battery, the Powerbeats Pros last up to nine hours before needing to be recharged – enough to last through an Iron Man workout. The box itself stores nearly two more charges, giving you up to 24 hours before you need to plug in the included USB-A-to-Lightning cable and return to an external power source.

The Powerbeat Pros are snug-fitting, rubber-covered beauts that come in black, navy, ivory and moss (green). They fit snugly and securely on the side of the head. The adjustable, bendable ear hooks provide the flexibility and support you need, making them a dream to wear.

They won’t slip out of their snug position during workouts. Thanks to their sweat and water resistant design, they are comfortable from the first step to the last, never hot, never slippery. They come with four different sized earbuds, but the pre-made pair fit us best.

Of course, the Powerbeats Pro have more to offer than just flexibility and comfort. There are also controls in the form of a volume rocker switch. The Beats icon itself is also a button. A single tap lets you answer calls and play/pause music, while a double tap fast forwards a track and a triple tap rewinds it. You can also fast forward and rewind by holding down the last tap.

Best of all, the controls are duplicated on both earpieces, so you don’t have to remember which side is responsible for what – that can make a difference when you’re on the treadmill and every little hesitation counts.

The other built-in technology that works wonders is a sensor that detects whether you’re wearing the headphones or not. If you take a pair of headphones off for a moment, it sends a message to your device to stop playing music. Put them back on and playback starts again. Every now and then the sensors get confused, but we really like this feature. You can also override the system by pressing the Beats button if you want to continue listening with just one earbud.

The wireless technology that connects the Powerbeats Pro to your music device is Bluetooth, of course, and Apple’s H1 chip is responsible for that. In terms of consistency of connection and ease of pairing, Bluetooth really is at its finest. There were no audio dropouts during our tests, and playback on both ears was always the same. There are also no cumbersome button combinations for Bluetooth setup.

Instead, pairing mode is activated every time you open the Powerbeats box with the headphones docked inside. Bring the box near an iOS device and pairing is automatic – it’s not much harder on Android. Once the box is paired with an iOS device, it will automatically register on any other devices you own. When you open the box near one of your iOS devices, it will graphically show you how much battery power you have left.
