Any music-listening athlete will look for three things in a pair of headphones: comfort, a secure fit, and a long battery life. With the explosion of wireless technology in recent years, you can now add securely fitting ear hooks and not even a smidgeon of cable to that list. Beats has redesigned its existing, sports-focused Powerbeats into a set of truly wireless headphones for runners and gym-goers, so the Beats Powerbeats Pros have all the ingredients.
The previous model’s cable, which dangled from the earbuds and wrapped around the back of the neck, has vanished. The Powerbeats Pros’ presentation is unmistakably on-message with parent company Apple. They’re packaged in a sleek, black charging case that’s a joy to open and close. It’s sturdy and smooth, and thanks to the magnetic catch, it won’t accidentally open up and spill your earbuds.
There’s a lot to like about the Beats Powerbeats Pro’s design. These earbuds have a sporty appearance while remaining practical enough to wear outside of the gym. The Powerbeats Pro have a centre playback control button where the Beats logo is, as well as a volume rocker on each of the two earbuds. That means you can control your music with whichever hand is available, which is a convenient feature.
It also helps that the Pro buds are extremely comfortable, not only in terms of how they fit in and around the ear, but also how they feel while listening to music. If you’ve used other true wireless headphones in the past, you may remember experiencing some in-ear pressure while listening to music. It’s something we’ve definitely felt while listening to other workout earbuds like the Jaybird X4, but it doesn’t exist with the Powerbeats Pro.
This is due to a micro-laser barometric venting hole in the front chamber, which, according to Apple, reduces pressure in the ear and improves bass response… Not that Beats headphones require any assistance with bass levels. Another factor that contributes to the excellent fit is the earbuds’ slim nozzle. It’s more compact than many other true wireless earbuds on the market, and with four different ear tip options, there are still plenty of ways to achieve the perfect seal.
