The Electric Life of Louis Wain

No stranger to playing characters who work at a higher frequency, Benedict Cumberbatch is a canny choice to play the prolific cat painter Louis Wain in this wonderful period biopic. Director Will Sharpe takes a witty and humorous approach to Wain’s eccentric life as a 19th-century artist known primarily for his anthropomorphized feline subjects. But this is also a tender story about mental health that is portrayed with imagination and empathy.

Cumberbatch gives a vibrant performance as Wain, whose deft skill with a pencil has landed him a full-time job as an illustrator at the Illustrated London News, with a little help from fatherly editor Sir William Ingram (Toby Jones). The death of his own father has left him in charge of a bustling but cash-strapped household of five sisters and a mother.

Annette

If you know anything about Annette, chances are Adam Driver sings a beautiful, tender love song (“We Love Each Other So Much”) to Marion Cotillard’s foo-foo. It happens twice, but still doesn’t break the top five weird shit moments that happen in Leos Carax’s wild and wacky phantasmagorical opera.

Although it ties in with the unfortunate romanticism of early works like Boy Meets Girl and Les Amants Du Pont-Neuf (some filmmakers have embraced the pain of lost love as a theme as fervently as Carax), Annette is really a film about how true love it can be undone by unbridled selfishness. The effects of Henry’s self-absorption, both as fuel for his art and as an Achilles’ heel in their relationships, are profound.

without remorse

The plot of Amazon’s “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse” is so incomprehensible that you could just type in the symbol Prince once used and it would serve as a valid synopsis. The gist of the film is simple: the enraged Navy SEAL seeks revenge after his pregnant wife is brutally gunned down on screen. Confusion arises when answering the questions of why she was killed, who did it, and what this has to do with the US government.

This is one of those super complicated conspiracy theory movies where nothing makes sense and you just stop caring. The rescuers inexplicably appear at just the right time. People go wrong just because they want to trick us. There’s no character development, lots of patriotic posturing, and the villain delivers a speech that needs to be written before a black actor is cast as the catcher. Despite the endless gunfire and loads of exploding shit, most of the action sequences fail to get the pulse racing.

Coming soon 2 America

There’s a scene in Coming 2 America where a character mocks Hollywood as an industry that throws out little more than superhero movies, remakes, and, most importantly here, sequels to classic movies to cash in on the nostalgia factor. In this scene, the movie seems to be reprimanding itself for existing.

Sadly, Coming 2 America is a largely unfunny movie with paper-thin characters, a ridiculously predictable script that seemingly didn’t progress beyond the first draft, and completely devoid of the charm of the original. What keeps it from becoming a total work are the performances, particularly that of Eddie Murphy.

metal sound

The fragility of daily existence is captured with empathy and compassion in Darius Marder’s excellent “Sound of Metal,” a film that should catapult Riz Ahmed to the top of any producer’s casting list. His work here is a model of restraint, a performance that looks for effective low-key choices rather than broad emotion every time and is made all the more powerful by feeling more genuine.

The “Night of” star plays Ruben, a heavy metal drummer who accompanies his girlfriend and singer Lou (Olivia Cooke). Marder and his co-writer/brother Abraham (the script also has a story credit for Derek Cianfrance, who worked with Marder on “The Place Beyond the Pines”) waste no time getting to the heart of their story.

Love and friendship

“Love & Friendship” feels like it’s inevitable. Director Whit Stillman adapting Jane Austen is one of those ideas that sounds invented because it’s so perfect, like Wes Anderson announcing that he’s going to make an animated movie about foxes based on a Roald Dahl book.

Stillman takes comedy to the brink of madness. He’s exceptionally good at this sort of thing and he’s at the top of his game here, putting characters in frame so you can see their faces when someone else says or does something that’s so idiotic they can’t believe it, or so it is. so obviously intended to deceive that they seem to be wondering if this is really happening or if it is a dream.

Borat post movie

An unusual feminist sequel to the comedy ‘Borat’, this is biting satire and brutal social commentary, giving the middle finger to political correctness, while also making a strong case against misogyny and patriarchy. The story follows Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen), a Kazakh television reporter who is sent to America to bribe powerful men to gain favors in return. Trouble arises when his teenage daughter (the fabulous Maria Bakalova) is smuggled into the United States to be with her father.

Maria Bakalova is just as uninhibited and cool as Sacha. As the emotional father-daughter angle takes center stage, the film loses steam and becomes generic. However, it provides you with enough and more awkward laughs that also make you introspective. Ridiculous and wacky, but insightful and hilarious…this isn’t a perfect movie that’s nice to watch, but it’s boldly different and daring.

the big sick

The Big Sick is inspired by the real life story of Pakistani-American comedian Kumail Nanjiani and his American wife Emily Gordon. Emily wrote this movie, and the two main characters, a Pakistani-American and an American, are named Kumail and Emily. And yet, though East and West seem further apart than ever, real life has rarely been so smooth. Interestingly yes, pleasantly definitely, but smooth.

However, there are many moments where Kumail and Emily’s crisp writing is noticeable, indicating why this was a story that begged to be told, perhaps now more than ever. It’s especially true of the natural way his dates and courtships are handled, without playing on the clichéd awkwardness of an immigrant.

knives out

The twists are twisty and fun, though far less flashy than the obvious pleasure he took in making this precision-machined puzzle box. Full of famous and vaguely familiar faces, the film takes the form of an old-fashioned whodunit, the kind that has mystery, suspense, entertainment, a dead body on a relic couch, and half a dozen wily suspects hanging around.

The house itself feels like a mousetrap, which works like a narrative puzzle in which the parts keep changing as the wood-paneled walls are closed off. The overall sense of confinement is perfect for the targets of a private investigator, Benoit Blanc, a honey-baked ham lover played by Daniel Craig with towering self-esteem and a southern drawl that seems taken from Kevin Spacey.
