ASUS ROG Strix G15

The Asus ROG Strix G15 is a mid-range gaming laptop that doesn’t look particularly special. It’s fairly bulky and comes with the usual selection of RGB lights and gamer-style logo adorning it. But it has a hidden superpower. Two, in fact. It’s the first laptop we’ve tested and reviewed in 2021 to come with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 3000-series graphics, the mobile version of the firm’s celebrated desktop GPU.

There are RGB lights backing the keyboard and, in case you needed further reminding that this machine is intended more for play than work, there’s also a strip of LEDs that wraps around the underside of the front portion of the laptop – the “Aura Sync Light bar” – and lights up your desk in cheerful, multi-coloured hues.

Acer Nitro 5

We could forgive the cheap plastic back cover, the basic keyboard, and the heavyweight. But for a gaming laptop, there’s hardly any excuse for the tacky trackpad and the average screen. Budget gamers will rejoice on the price, but hardcore ones will find very little to delight in.

We like the subdued gamer look, with its red trimmings on the keyboard, backlight, trackpad and the top rear bar. The display hinges feel sturdy and secure, and the amount of ports on hand is a boon. More importantly, the laptop has a comfortable keyboard, and a user-controllable cooling system.

The MSI Pulse GL66 is an odd beast. It adheres to old-school gaming laptop styling—all plastic and chunky aesthetics—while also packing some of the latest technology. This model’s spec, however, makes it a little odd. It has a powerful 11th Gen Core i7, paired with the lowest take on Nvidia’s Ampere architecture.

The other part of the performance equation is, of course, the GPU. This is where the MSI Pulse GL66 comes unstuck, although not necessarily for the reason you may first think. MSI has squeezed an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 Ti in alongside that potentially-powerful CPU, which is a GPU we haven’t, as yet, seen grace our desktop machines.

MSI Stealth 15M

The MSI Stealth 15M is the latest slimline gaming laptop to pack next-generation components into a lightweight, super portable form factor. The days of bulky rigs may be well and truly behind us, but while the Stealth 15M shows us what the path forward for the best gaming laptops can truly look like, cooling and battery shortcomings concede that we’re not quite there yet.

It’s that everyday functionality that really makes the Stealth 15M shine. Not only are you picking up an understated design that will fit just as well into any office as it would a gaming desk setup, but using this machine for casual computing tasks also feels incredible.

Razer Blade 15

The keyboard may not be field-leading, but it’s still on the nicer side. There’s a balanced amount of travel and feedback, neither too muscular nor too resistant, and the keys are individually backlit with customizable RGB lighting. The included Razer Synapse software lets you change each key’s color and visual effects to create appealing patterns or useful highlights.

The new Blade 15’s screen, though, is one of the first laptop panels to combine 1440p (2,560-by-1,440-pixel) resolution and 240Hz refresh. Desktop 1440p monitors have become familiar as more powerful GPUs have been able to push high frame rates at this more demanding resolution, but until Nvidia’s “Ampere” launch, that was too big a reach for mobile systems.

MSI GS75 Stealth

The MSI GS75 Stealth is an excellent gaming laptop with plenty of power and superb graphics. Additionally, despite its large screen, it features a very sleek design and slim chassis. The only drawback is that it has a short battery life and gets hot quickly when gaming.

MSI wowed the gaming world when it released the 15-inch GS65 Stealth in 2018, which is the GS75 Stealth’s predecessor. GS65 Stealth had it all: slim bezels, impressive gaming performance, an unbelievably thin chassis, stunning design, just name it. A year later, MSI brought the same design to the 17-inch GS75 Stealth. Along with its larger size are updated components such as NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti graphics.

Acer Predator Triton 500

If you can afford it, we can see no reason to opt for anything else. Admittedly the screen, though almost, is the infinitesimally disappointing, but what Acer has managed to squeeze into the slimline form of the Predator Triton 500 is nothing short of remarkable.

The case of the Predator Triton 500 is a satisfying aluminum on top and bottom, giving it an air of indestructibility, although my confidence in the top lid isn’t the highest – there’s a higher-than-expected level of flex in the screen section , particularly next to something like the Asus ROG Zephyrus 14.

Alienware m15 R4

The ports merit some praise and some criticism. The selection itself is above reproach. On the right, you’ll find two USB-A ports and a microSD slot. On the left, there’s an Ethernet port, a USB-A port and a 3.5 mm audio jack. These are all well and good. On the one hand, the USB-C port is an integral part of Alienware’s eGPU setup, so there needs to be one on the back of the m15 R4.

The back is where things get a little less optimized. In addition to a rather inconvenient power port (slightly left-of-center on the back – just far enough from anything to comfortably reach), there’s an Alienware Graphics Amplifier connection, a USB-C port with Thunderbolt 3 support, a mini-DisplayPort and a full-size HDMI port.

MSI GE76 Raider

The MSI GE76 Raider is a very gaming laptop. Clad entirely in aluminum, with angular design flourishes and a Titanium Blue colorway that looks more gray than blue, this is a laptop you know someone will cover in cheesy Call of Duty stickers. And while that is definitely something that is going to turn a lot of people off (honestly, us included), there is definitely a ton of people that still value that kind of aesthetic. We’re just grateful that it feels so solid.

The MSI GE76 Raider, with its all-aluminum build, feels like you could drop it off of your desk, and you’d be more worried about the floor than the laptop. There is a bit of flex, particularly above the keyboard and below the screen, but it doesn’t feel like it would, like, break or anything.
