little goose pagoda

The Little Goose Pagoda was named after its larger and better-known namesake, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and was used to store ancient Buddhist sutras. Built in 707 during the Tang dynasty in front of its mother temple, the Jianfu Temple, it stood 45 meters tall until it was partially destroyed in the 1556 earthquake. Today, the pyramid-shaped pagoda rises 43 meters and miraculously still stands 13 of its original 15 floors.

Visitors can climb a wooden spiral staircase to a viewing platform with views of the temple complex and Xi’an. The Little Goose Pagoda is famous for its morning bell, which can be rung for good luck. Terracotta warriors

The Terracotta Army or Terracotta Warriors and Horses (兵马俑), considered one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 20th century and the eighth wonder of the world, buried 1.5 km east of the Qinshihuang Mausoleum, is the emperor’s funerary object Qinshihuang (259 -210 BC), the first emperor of China. In ancient China, people believed in the afterlife, so Emperor Qinshihuang built terracotta warriors and horses as his underground army to protect his soul in the afterlife.

In 1979, the Qin Terracotta Warriors and Horses Museum was opened to the public at the excavation site. In 1987, the museum, together with the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor (in 2009 they were combined into the Emperor Qinshihuang Mausoleum Site Museum, the museum was voted one of the top 25 museums in the world by Trip Advisor, the only museum Asian on the list), was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Built in 1380 in the early Ming dynasty (no nails!), the Drum Tower has been renovated twice and the architecture is a mix of Tang and Qing dynasty styles. Inside, you will find a large number of drums decorated with Chinese writing.

Look for the newest cowhide-covered drum in the collection – it’s the largest in China! Visitors can enjoy musical performances, listen to the morning bell and evening drumbeat, and climb to the top of the 38-meter tower for great views of the city.

Bell tower

The Bell Tower is located in the center of Xian city and can be easily found on the city map at the intersection of the four main streets in the east, west, south and north. It is the symbol of the city of Xian and the largest and best preserved ancient tower in China. Built in the Tang dynasty and rebuilt and renovated in the early Ming dynasty (1394), the bell tower has survived for more than 600 years. In 1582, the tower was moved to the city center about 1,000 meters from its original location.

It has two floors and 3 layers of eaves. From both floors, there is a magnificent panoramic view of the city of Xian. The huge gray bricks below the tower are covered with red columns and dark green roof tiles, like an abstract Christmas tree. When illuminated at night, the tower shines and looks beautiful against the background of the dark blue sky.

Emperor Jingdi’s Tomb

The Jingdi Emperor’s Tomb is the final resting place of the Han Dynasty emperor and his queen. During his reign, Jingdi had a great impact on the lives of his people, using the forces of peace and diplomacy instead of war.

Built between 188 and 141 BC in northern Xi’an, it is one of the city’s most underrated attractions. The interior consists of two areas: the museum and the tombs. The museum showcases more than 2,500 years of history, including more than 50,000 toy-sized terracotta figurines that were unusual for the time in that they depicted eunuchs, servants, and female chivalry. Explore 21 of the 81 narrow shafts inside the tomb, one of the only underground mausoleums in China.

The Great Mosque of Xian

Located just a few hundred meters from the Muslim Quarter, the Xian Grand Mosque is a famous Muslim site where authentic ancient buildings blend with traditional Chinese style and Islamic culture. This holy mosque offers not only a great opportunity to learn about the diversity of Chinese culture and delicate architectural art, but also a quiet retreat with lush plants where you can look around away from the crowds and busy streets nearby.

There are several explanations based on folklore. The most accepted version states that the mosque was first built in the year 742 AD. C., the first year of the Tianbao period of the Tang dynasty, as evidenced by a monument inscribed by the ancient official Wang Gong and the exact date.

Hanyangling Museum

Hanyangling Museum, also called Hanyangling, Tomb of Emperor Jingdi, Han Dynasty Yangling Mausoleum, is the joint tomb of Emperor Jing of the Han Dynasty and his empress. The mausoleum took a total of 28 years to complete, beginning in 153 BC. C. and ending in 126 a.

Located in the northern suburb of Xian, near Xian Xianyang International Airport, Hanyangling is a national 4A tourist post, a nature park with vast botanical fields and an important cultural site.
