Best Steam Alternatives 2024: for a better gaming experience

You may not want to start Steam for various reasons, including the fact that your country has limited access to it or that you simply do not want to use it to download your games.

No matter if I’m on Windows, Mac, or Linux, Steam is the perfect place for me to buy digital games for my computer. It has a huge collection of games, which is why gamers like it so much. On the other hand, I’ve learned that there are other great choices if you want to find good games at fair prices. Like me, you might be looking for alternatives to Steam. If that sounds like you, keep reading for my suggestions.

As a digital platform for video game distribution, Steam is truly outstanding. It offers an easy-to-use design and connects millions of loyal gamers, making it easy to browse new releases, keep track of old favorites, and keep up with friends’ games. In some cases, however, you may want to switch things up and use other platforms. You may not want to start Steam for various reasons, including the fact that your country has limited access to it or that you simply do not want to use it to download your games. Below, we have listed the best alternatives to Steam.

Check The List Of Best Steam Alternatives

Good Old Games

GOG.com (the company formerly known as Good Old Games) is the store to visit if you fancy Alone in the Dark, Baldur’s Gate, Freddy Parkas: Frontier Pharmacist, and other classic PC games from the 1990s and early 2000s. Although GOG.com specializes in retro titles, the company takes a very progressive view of how it distributes content: None of its games feature restrictive digital rights management (DRM).

This two-pronged attack has allowed GOG.com to thrive in the PC game market dominated by Steam. We are happy to say that GOG.com’s service is pretty darn good, too, despite some minor complaints.

Origin

Origin is a PC gaming platform designed and operated by Electronic Arts. It is designed to simplify the process of buying, installing and playing EA games in one universal application. The application is available on PC, Mac, and mobile devices. Within Origin, users can manage their game profiles, add/chat with friends, launch or join games, stream on Twitch, and even connect the service to popular social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.

GreenMan Gaming

Green Man Gaming is a global e-commerce technology company in the video game industry and the first choice for millions of passionate gamers worldwide. We offer a wide range of games, from AAA to indie titles, on multiple platforms and in 196 countries around the world. We work with over 500 publishers and developers to offer our customers a wide range of games at competitive prices. Green Man Gaming also helps developers publish their games and bring them to market, supporting them at every step.

Our passion for games and a robust community platform allow players to access the latest insights, reviews, and updates from the gaming industry. This gaming data allows us to further improve the overall gaming experience. Our goal is to help gamers connect, play, and enjoy better gaming experiences.

G2A

G2A.com is a website that, like Gumtree or eBay, brings together buyers and sellers of gray market game keys for PC games and activation codes for PSN and Xbox Live credit, as well as regulations for other software, gift cards, and, these days, even gaming hardware.

To be clear, G2A does not sell game codes, at least as far as we know. It is exclusively a marketplace where people can sell game codes. The user buys the key, waits for it to be emailed to them, and then they go to the relevant platform-Epic, Games Store, Steam, Uplay, etc.-you, logs in, and select the option to activate a game. You paste the key and download the game files from the platform’s servers, not G2A’s.

Humble Bundle

Humble Bundle is a robust digital store of games and more that not only offers frequent deals on its products but also donates to charity for every purchase made by users. It is not a feature-rich social hub like Steam, our editorially chosen PC game marketplace. However, it is worth considering Humble Bundle as part of your purchasing process.

PC games make up the bulk of Humble Bundle’s library. By partnering with a number of different game stores, its catalog consists of major AAA titles, such as Death Stranding and Monster Hunter: World, to indie gems like Dead Cells and Fall Guys. Humble Bundle also has an excellent reputation as a publisher of indie games, having released A Hat in Time, Void Bastards, Wandersong, and other acclaimed games, all of which are, of course, available on the site.

GamersGate

When one thinks of on-demand games, usually the first thing that comes to mind is Steam since many of us have it by default, having bought Half-Life 2 and so on. But some services have been around just as long and offer the same huge variety of games, such as GamersGate, which we highlight because of CrunchGear’s ongoing war against the technological status quo (e.g., Zune).

Online game distribution is becoming as standard as ordering books and electronics online, so why tie yourself to one store? It’s no different than checking prices on Newegg and TigerDirect-just open another tab. GamersGate’s clientless format may be more or less convenient, or perhaps the game you’re looking for is on sale at one of the two stores but not the other.

Microsoft Store

The Microsoft Store in Windows 10 remains an integral part of the operating system. It is the way users can securely pay for, download, and install their favorite third-party applications. More importantly, it is how system apps are updated to keep the operating system up to date with new features. It is an integral part of the Windows experience as a service, which is why I am shocked at how poor the Microsoft Store as an app is.

The Microsoft Store has several problems, the main one being the lack of apps. This is not helped because not even Microsoft puts all of its apps in the store. Microsoft Teams, for example, is not there. Nor is Visual Studio Code or Microsoft Office there. This is not a positive picture for other developers who wish to distribute their apps in the Microsoft Store.

Itch.io

It may seem hard to believe, but modern video games are not limited to bloated military propaganda and free-to-play mobile Skinner boxes. The indie development scene has never been more vibrant, allowing a wide range of artists to create thought-provoking, morally poignant, radically ideological, or just plain wacky games. Itch.io is an excellent gaming marketplace for discovering new and fascinating games for PC, but also for Linux, macOS, smartphones, and even browser-based titles.

Itch.io, active since 2013, is a digital game store dedicated to curating and highlighting indie games found nowhere else. It includes fantastic tools for buyers and sellers. Know in advance that the library targets a very specific indie audience, but if you’re tired of mainstream gaming blockbusters and want to explore the more artistic corners of what the medium has to offer, check out Itch.io’s marketplace.

Epic Games Store

One of the most significant and obvious differences between Valve’s Steam and the new Epic Games Store is that the latter has no game reviews. When users of Epic Games’ new storefront go to a game’s page, they see no reviews from other users, but that could change.

Tim Sweeney, the founder of Epic Games, confirmed that the team is “working on a review system” for Epic Games Store. It will be based on Unreal Engine’s marketplace review system, explained Sweeney, who added that the review system will be “opt-in” by developers. This means that developers will decide whether or not to display user reviews on their games’ pages.

Uplay

UPLAY is a workshop for artists and researchers engaged in the development of playful strategies and interfaces for forms of social/participatory/political (inter)action in urban space. It deals with locative strategies and tools for urban play, potentials, problems of participatory formats, and collaborative/distributed/networked game development.

Participants are invited not only to present and discuss their own projects but also to collaborate in the development of a (level) situated game in Ruhrort. Closed workshop sessions for applied participants follow a public lecture presentation by workshop leaders; game sessions are open to the public.

Final Words

If you like to play games, you can download them using these great Steam alternatives. They are all perfect. In some, you can download games for free, while in others you have to pay to get a specific number of games. You will never get bored again once you have access to a wide selection of games.
