Best Water Bottles 2024: stay cool on the move

Water bottles are practical, eco-friendly, and promote healthy hydration habits by providing a convenient means of carrying water wherever you go.

I’ve seen firsthand how great it is to use the best water bottles to stay hydrated throughout the day. I’ve been able to try a lot of different things and have found my absolute favorites, which I always have with me on my busy days. Having a good water bottle with me has made it much easier to track how much water I drink every day.

It’s really amazing how staying well-hydrated can improve our health as a whole. I can say from personal experience that drinking a lot of water is good for you. It helps us digest food, makes sure that our cells get the nutrients and oxygen they need, and keeps us feeling energized and refreshed.

Long time people figured out how to make an insulated water bottle that keeps cold drinks cold and hot drinks hot. The design and manufacture of these refillable bottles has now improved so much that they hardly leak, although some do, and the durable powder coating means you’re less likely to get scuffs all over the bottle. The best of the best have a prettier lid and little designer swirls that make them easier to drink when you carry them with you all day long. But this is an increasingly crowded category.

Many bottles contain unnecessary gimmicks to stand out. That’s why we’ve rounded up only the very best refillable water bottles that are worth your hard-earned dollars and flagged the ones we don’t like so you can stay away. These bottles are a great way to get rid of single-use plastic in your life. Below, we have best water bottles.

Best Water Bottles

Iron Flask Sports Water Bottle

Best Water Bottles
BrandIron Flask
MaterialStainless Steel
CapacityVaries (e.g., 18 oz, 32 oz, 64 oz)
InsulationDouble-Walled
Lid TypeScrew-On
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Comes with two lids (straw lid and flip lid), Wide mouth opening, Carabiner attached

Available in a myriad of sizes and colors, the Iron Flask double-insulated water bottle truly has something for everyone, regardless of age, build or budget. From the modest 14-ounce capacity to the 64-ounce capacity, each flask has three different lids to switch between hot and cold beverages. The Iron Flask is capable of keeping cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12 hours.

In addition to a stainless steel lid and a flip-top lid, the third lid has a built-in carabiner clip, ideal for attaching your beverage of choice to a backpack or bike rack. The 40-ounce size was a bit bulky in my adult male hands, and we imagine the 64-ounce model is even less manageable. The powder-coated finish looks elegant, but be sure to get a good grip on the item if the outside is wet. Since this water bottle is sweat-free, however, this is only an issue if you are messy while refueling.

Brita Stainless Steel Filter Bottle

Best Water Bottles
BrandBrita
MaterialStainless Steel
Capacity20 oz
InsulationSingle-Walled
Lid TypeFlip Top
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Filtered water, Filter cartridge, Carrying loop

The Brita stainless steel filter bottle is super stylish, leak-proof and durable. We like the color options and the shape and design of the lid. The silicone straw has a nice texture and does not impart too much flavor. That said, the bottle should only be used with water because of its filter. The flip-top cap is the most effective and functional of all the bottles with this feature. This bottle is lightweight and portable, has a great design, and is reasonably priced.

We are big fans and did not even realize that a bottle with a filter was something we needed in our lives before we tested this bottle. The two main problems with this bottle are its size and lack of versatility. The bottle has a rather small capacity: it holds only 20 ounces of liquid, which is quickly used up if you drink a lot of water as we do. The second is the lack of versatility. Since it is a filter bottle, we hesitated to put any flavorings in it for fear of contaminating the filter.

LARQ Bottle Movement PureVis

Best Water Bottles
BrandLARQ
MaterialStainless Steel
Capacity24 oz
InsulationDouble-Walled
Lid TypeScrew-On
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, UV-C LED purification system, Self-cleaning mode, Rechargeable battery

LARQ Bottle Movement PureVis not just a figure of speech: it is a state-of-the-art water bottle with a self-cleaning UVC LED light built into the cap. When activated, it can eliminate up to 99.99 percent of bacteria and 99.99 percent of viruses from drinking water; the 280-nanometer UV light triggers a photochemical reaction inside the bottle to eliminate germs and viruses, such as E.coli and Salmonella.

Made of electropolished stainless steel, the LARQ Movimento PureVis bottle is available in six different colors. We tried the 24-ounce model, and the contoured design fit well in my hand. The silicone sleeve is also slightly snug and it is not easy to spill the bottle once filled.

YETI Rambler 26

Best Water Bottles
BrandYETI
MaterialStainless Steel
Capacity26 oz
InsulationDouble-Walled
Lid TypeMagSlider
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Dishwasher safe, NoSweat design, DuraCoat color, Wide opening

The Yeti Rambler remains our favorite water bottle this season, despite stiff competition from Hydro Flask. Its impressive insulating capabilities, perfect size, wide mouth and innovative Chug cap make the Rambler our top recommendation. It is portable, yet easy to fill and clean thanks to its wide mouth. We found that it is easy to fill the bottle with ice cubes, allowing for cold drinks all day long.

The updated Chug Cap is essentially a spout insert that eliminates the spills that occurred with the old wide-mouth design, making it more convenient to drink on the go. Although the list of positives is long, we must also mention some problems we encountered with this bottle. Like most Yeti products, this bottle is far from lightweight. Its design is durable but bulky, weighing much more than its competitors and making us disinclined to put it in our backpack for hiking or mountain climbing.

Hidrate Spark 3

Best Water Bottles
BrandHidrate
MaterialTritan Plastic
Capacity20 oz
InsulationSingle-Walled
Lid TypeStraw
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Tracks water intake, Glows to remind you to hydrate, Smart sensor technology

Aimed at the supposedly forgetful techies who can’t get enough of connectivity, Hidrate Spark 3 is a fun, fitness-focused way to keep your body fully hydrated. The bottle itself syncs with the Hidrate Spark app, which tracks daily hydration goals. It’s a bit of an extravagant solution, but the potential health benefits outweigh the price. Available in a single 20-ounce size, the Spark 3 reminds you to hydrate by lighting up at set intervals.

With built-in location, you can use the app to find the bottle if you lose it. It may seem trivial, but proper hydration is no joke, and the Hidrate Spark 3 helps you prioritize your daily well-being by keeping up with your hydration goals; after filling out a user profile, it calculates your ideal hydration status, creating personalized goals for you to follow.

Nalgene Wide-Mouth

Best Water Bottles
BrandNalgene
MaterialTritan Plastic
CapacityVaries (e.g., 16 oz, 32 oz, 48 oz)
InsulationSingle-Walled
Lid TypeScrew-On
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Wide mouth opening, Measurement markers, Dishwasher safe

If you are looking for a bottle that is simple, inexpensive, and easy to use, look no further than the Nalgene Wide-Mouth. No wonder this classic bottle is ubiquitous in the outdoor world. It is durable, lightweight, easy to use and clean, and these features combine to make it one of the best plastic models we tested. The ml and ounce gauges on the side are an added bonus for cooking in the country and keeping track of hydration.

Because these bottles have dominated the market for so long, many backpacking accessories are designed to fit the Nalgene perfectly: think water filters, insulators, and water bottle pockets. It also comes in an endless variety of sizes, colors and shapes, so you can choose one to suit your style. The wide mouth may not suit everyone, but Nalgene also makes bottles with narrow mouths.

CamelBak Quick Grip Chill Handheld Hydration Pack

Best Water Bottles
BrandCamelBak
MaterialPolypropylene, Silicone
Capacity17 oz
InsulationSingle-Walled
Lid TypeSqueeze
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Insulated handheld, Adjustable strap, Quick Stow Flask, Zippered pocket

While CamelBak is best known for its backpack hydration bags, the Quick Grip Chill Handheld Hydration Pack is designed for shorter cardio workouts; it comes in a 17-ounce size that fits perfectly in the palm of your hand.

And that’s the point, by the way. The triangular-shaped Peak Fitness water bottle has a tapered design and the self-sealing cap is ideal for runners of all ages. The water bottle fits snugly inside a breathable mesh pouch, available in three different color combinations.

Platypus DuoLock SoftBottle

Best Water Bottles
BrandPlatypus
MaterialNylon, Polyethylene
CapacityVaries (e.g., 0.5 L, 1.0 L, 2.0 L)
InsulationSingle-Walled
Lid TypeScrew-On
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Flexible and collapsible, Dual-locking cap, Carrying handle

Platypus maintains the lead in the collapsible bottle category, and the DuoLock remains our favorite bottle of this type. The DuoLock is still one of the lightest bottles we have tested, and its size when closed is wonderfully small, making it our top choice when weight is important and space is limited. The ingenious two-part lid design provides a secure lid and a narrow spout that eliminates spills, especially with such a floppy bottle.

The Hydrapak Stow ranked second to the DuoLock. We liked the carrying handle and the shape of the Stow’s bottle. It is much shorter and stockier than the Platypus DuoLock, which felt more compact in our backpack when full. Both bottles have a narrow mouth and a pouch-like body, which makes them difficult to clean. The DuoLock remained our top choice because it is less expensive than its competitor, weighs less, and drinks better.

Hydro Flask

Best Water Bottles
BrandHydro Flask
MaterialStainless Steel
CapacityVaries (e.g., 12 oz, 21 oz, 40 oz)
InsulationDouble-Walled
Lid TypeFlex Cap
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Wide mouth opening, TempShield insulation, Pro-grade stainless steel, Powder-coated finish

Some of the best water bottles on this list also make great thermos flasks, and the Hydro Flask might be my new favorite travel companion. Made of 18/8 stainless steel, this water bottle is dishwasher safe, so you won’t have to worry about sticking your hand in the narrow mouth to clean it. The slim, leak-proof design of the 24-ounce model is also the perfect size for any vehicle’s cup holder.

If you are looking for a water bottle/thermometer that works, this is it. The cobalt blue Hydro Flask we reviewed has a non-slip, sweat-resistant powder coating, but you can choose from 16 other colors. The swivel strap makes it easy to carry the bottle, and the whole structure is sturdy enough that it can also be used as a self-defense tool. This slim bottle is excellent for almost any cup holder.

S’Well Roamer

Best Water Bottles
BrandS’well
MaterialStainless Steel
Capacity64 oz
InsulationDouble-Walled
Lid TypeScrew-On
Additional FeaturesBPA-free, Wide mouth opening, Triple-layer insulation, Leak-free design, Condensation-free

While many of the water bottles on this list are intended for mobility, the S’well Roamer can practically serve as a kettlebell. In fact, S’well introduces the Roamer as “your new go-to jug,” which is great, because we weren’t planning on taking it with me to my next HIIT workout. It comes in two large sizes and a variety of beautiful designs, such as Teakwood, Blue Cornflower, Sunkissed, and Night Sky. If you are looking for something smaller, S’well offers a variety of smaller cups and bottles.

My 60-ounce test unit was Teakwood colored, and we immediately fell in love with the design; it looks more like a work of art than a water bottle. On its own, the Roamer is already bottom-heavy, so it’s hard to spill, and the spout is big enough to put ice cubes in. It is easy enough to use it as a giant water bottle if you have the forearms to do so, but as advertised, the Roamer works best as a mobile pitcher.
