An all-in-one supertank printer made for small or home offices is the Epson EcoTank ET-3850. It takes the place of the Epson EcoTank ET-3760, and while it operates similarly, it delivers more pages for text documents in both colour and black-and-white. You can effortlessly digitise reports or forms using the unit’s high-resolution flatbed scanner and automatic document feeder. Unfortunately, it has poor colour accuracy, making it unsuitable for individuals looking for a device with accurate colour reproduction. The access to paper jams is fantastic, but it doesn’t feel as well-built as other supertank possibilities.

Due to the need to fit four fairly big ink reservoirs, the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 is slightly larger than other A4 all-in-ones, but it conceals its size nicely. All of its flaps, including the ADF and tilting control panel, fold away smoothly, giving it an almost cuboidal shape. At 6.7kg, it is shockingly lightweight, and the structure feels a little fragile. Despite all the polystyrene protection, our sample arrived in a dented carton that had obviously been dropped. This was enough to for the ADF flaps to come apart. It doesn’t feel like a high-end quality, but they clipped back in without suffering any lasting damage.

Although the ink tanks are prominent on the right side, they are otherwise well integrated, and we enjoy how simple it is to replenish them. The nozzles on the ink bottles are designed to fit precisely into the appropriate tank and only open when properly inserted. Watch the reservoir fill as you just invert the bottle and twist it into position. The window is made of transparent plastic. You should not worry since the ink will stop flowing once it is full.

The Epson EcoTank ET-3850 has all the essential characteristics of a home office printer, however there are a few things that are missing. While there is no duplex scan mode, it does have an auto duplex mode. It features built-in Wi-Fi and a USB connector at the back for a hard wired connection to your computer, but it lacks a USB Host port in the front for walk-up printing from a thumb drive. It can print in colour or black and white on any type of blank media up to A4 size.

Although you might have expected a touchscreen at this price point, the 6.1cm LCD is colour. As a result, Epson is not covering the initial cost of the printer by selling additional ink, which is why it is cutting back on such functions. This situation does not fit the outdated “razor and blade” business model that was successful with Epson’s low-cost cartridge inkjet printers.
