The Logitech MK540 mouse, on the other hand, is pretty basic. It is a standard 3-button mouse with a scroll wheel and is not as advanced as the mouse that came with the 850. However, it does come with a soft-touch coating for more comfort, and its shape allows it to be used as both a left- and right-handed mouse. Other than that, there is nothing special about this mouse.

Measuring 18 x 7.6 x 0.9 inches and weighing 1.9 pounds with batteries installed, the roomy MK540 is not a keyboard to pack in your backpack for mobile typing. Still, the keyboard feels great on your desk, especially thanks to the curved plastic palm rest. The MK540 also comes with extendable feet that allow you to tilt the keyboard at a four- or eight-degree angle.

The Logitech MK540 has numerous hotkeys, from search, save, and print to settings, lock, and calculator. There are also 10 programmable buttons that you can customize with the Logitech Options app. A nice bonus is the dedicated volume and media playback keys that flank the Logitech logo just above the main keyboard. A single, compact USB dongle connects the Logitech MK540 keyboard and accompanying mouse via 2.4 GHz RF wireless signals.

Both the keyboard and mouse came to life the moment I plugged the USB dongle into my PC; no drivers were required. The keyboard goes into sleep mode after a few minutes of inactivity, but immediately reactivates as soon as I press a key. The MK540 keyboard and mouse is designed for Windows and Chrome OS systems, but can also be connected to a Mac, although there is no way to properly map the keyboard’s hotkeys to macOS functions.

The software allows you to configure aspects of your hardware, such as the functions of the function keys. This allows you to increase functionality, but it is not necessary that you use these functions. Speaking of function keys, there are quite a few useful keyboard shortcuts. Many of the shortcuts relate to basic functions such as web browsing, window management, and items in the File menu. This makes the MK540 a practical keyboard for productivity.
