Buy Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ in just $899.99 at Best Buy

The Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ is a mid-generation update to the original Surface Pro 7 tablet that offers some performance and usability improvements, and while it’s far from the most exciting product released in the last year, there are reasons to consider purchasing one in 2022.

It’s worth noting that while Surface devices are popular with creatives (especially those who prefer Windows over IOS), the Microsoft Surface Pro 7+ is actually intended for business professionals and enterprise customers – much like Microsoft’s new Surface Laptop Studio – and is marketed as such, though it’s not difficult to purchase as a regular consumer.

The improvements over the original Surface Pro 7 come in the form of a newer, more powerful generation of processors that offer increased graphics performance and longer battery life, as well as a removable SSD and integrated LTE (Long-Term Evolution) on select models. The increased graphics performance makes the device more appealing to those looking to use a tablet or 2-in-1 to run creative apps alongside those for work or play, but there are still some notable drawbacks.

The screen may look a bit dated thanks to the chunky edges, but thankfully the tech is still competent. The 12.3-inch PixelSense display has a resolution of 2736 x 824 pixels and can switch between different magnification and color modes. PixelSense is a touchscreen technology developed by Microsoft that optimizes multi-touch, hand gestures and optical recognition. In our tests, it achieved an sRGB coverage of around 91%. For comparison, the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9″ achieves an sRGB color space coverage of around 120%.

While this lower figure isn’t the end of the world, it certainly doesn’t give it much of an advantage over the iPad Pro line of tablets, even when you take into account things like the style of the two brands’ respective pens. While both generations of the Apple Pencil resemble a… well, a stylus, the Surface Slim Pen 2 has a somewhat unnatural shape and a weight that doesn’t quite meet the same comfort standards.

Sensitivity is the same as the Wacom One Pen at 4,096 pressure levels, but that’s still about half that of the more powerful Wacom Display tablets. Still, the Surface Slim Pen 2 far outperforms the older Surface Pen and improves things like tilt detection – so if you can overlook the odd shape, it’s a great thing.

The physical design is unchanged from the original Surface Pro 7, so there’s a distinct lack of ports on the Surface Pro 7+, but that shouldn’t surprise you since it’s a tablet device. You get a standard headphone jack, a USB-C port, and a USB-A port, as well as features like facial recognition via Windows Hello, Wi-Fi 6 support, and 1.6W Dolby Atmos speakers. There is also a small flap on the back that hides an M.2 2230 SSD that can be freely removed and upgraded if you want to expand your storage.

One big criticism is the lack of Thunderbolt 4, so you have to rely on the magnetic Surface Connect port for docking. This is disappointing, as it ties you to the Surface ecosystem and requires you to buy the Surface Dock 2 to connect up to two 4K monitors at 60 Hz. Some Microsoft fans opt for Windows products over Apple offerings because they don’t want to be tied into a strict product ecosystem, so this feels rather exclusionary.

The lack of ports also makes adding additional peripherals a bit of a hassle, so you might want to opt for a mouse and keyboard that use Bluetooth instead of a wired connection. The WiFi-only models come with a MicroSDXC card reader so you can quickly transfer pictures or files from another device. This is not the case for the LTE versions.
