Buy Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 in just $179.99 at Best Buy

Like most tablets on the market, the Galaxy Tab A8 is not a flashy device in terms of color or design. Our review unit has a dark gray back, and the only hint of some flair is a slightly lighter toned stripe running along one edge. Other than that and the camera lens, the device looks like a big gray slate. Most importantly, the back is matte, not glossy, so it won’t pick up fingerprints and smudges.

While it’s a growing trend for devices with large screens to reduce the borders around the screen, this device still has pretty heavy black bars around the edges, and while they’re at least uniform in size (unlike the iPad 9), it would look more appealing with a minimal border around the edges. At least we are spared the unsightly indentation in the display, which was unfortunately also present in the brand’s flagship tablet, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra.

The tablet still features a 3.5 mm headphone jack for wired audio playback, which has long been absent from many premium smartphones, including Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series, as well as a dedicated MicroSD card slot in case you want to expand the storage or transfer photos from your camera more easily. The latter feature could prove to be particularly useful since only 18.2 GB of the 32 GB of base storage is actually available after the system requirements and preinstalled apps are done.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A8 has a 10.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels which is the definition of Full HD or 1080p. It is sufficiently sharp for an inexpensive tablet of this size, but since it is a TFT-LCD panel, it is not particularly vivid or true to color. IPS LCD panels deliver better colors and viewing angles. A peak brightness of 327 nits is okay, but nothing special. Even in relatively bright light conditions, you will certainly not like to use the tablet outdoors.

With a simple refresh rate of 60 Hz, it is not particularly smooth either. But Apple is still sticking to 60 Hz for all of its non-Pro iPads, which is not necessarily to be expected for such a cheap tablet. The quality of the image output is the real weak point, especially considering Samsung is positioning this tablet as an affordable media player. In fact, Samsung has equipped the Tab A8 with four speakers and Dolby Atmos support.
