Change Finder Dock Icon on Mac OS

This guide is about the How to Change the Finder Dock Icon in Mac OS X. I will try my best so that you understand this guide very well. I hope you all like this guide How to Change the Finder Dock Icon in Mac OS X.

The dock icon for the Finder’s smiling face has been on Mac OS X since the beginning, and the Finder face itself has been on Mac OS since its earliest sources. Some users may want to change the Dock Finder icon to something else for editing, but the process is a bit more complicated than simply changing the icon elsewhere on a Mac using the traditional Get Info method.

This is a slightly advanced process that involves editing system folder documents. If you’re not happy with this idea, you probably shouldn’t try to change the docking icons this way. Always back up your Mac before making changes or changes to the operating system’s core folders.

Customize and change the Finder Dock icon in Mac OS X.

Because of this walkthrough, the default smiling Finder icon is replaced with a laptop image of Mac icons buried in OS X. However, all other PNG image files work.

  1. Keep the PNG file you want to use as an icon handy, name it “finder.png” for a regular Mac or “finder@2x.png” for a Retina Mac – transparent PNG files that are at least 256 × 256 pixels work best
  2. In OS X Finder, bring up Command + Shift + G Go to the folder and type the following path:
  3. /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/

  4. Find a file called “finder.png” and “finder@2x.png” (another file is for a retina mac, not necessary for standard definition screens) and make a copy of them on your desktop or elsewhere, this will work as a backup
  5. Drag and drop your new “finder.png” file that you want to use as a new icon into the Resources folder, acknowledge the change, and click Replace
  6. Change the Finder Dock icon

  7. In the Finder, press Command + Shift + G again and this time go to the following path:
  8. / private / var / folders /

  9. In the Finder search box, type “com.apple.dock.iconcache” and select “folders” (the current directory and all subdirectories) as the search parameter.
  10. Trash “com.apple.dock.iconcache” when found
  11. Clear the Dock icon cache

  12. Now launch the Terminal application located in the / Applicaitons / Utilities / directory and type the following to update the Dock:
  13. killall Dock

  14. The dock restarts and displays a new Finder icon, replacing the smiling face as you choose

The Dock Finder icon was replaced with a custom icon

To return to the default Finder Dock icon, simply use the Go to Folder button again, and then copy the backups you made from the “finder@2x.png” and “finder.png” folders to the following directory:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Dock.app/Contents/Resources/

Now all you have to do is trash the icon cache file and restart the Dock. You have a great smiling Finder-happy face icon, as if it had never been replaced.

If you want to customize things even further, you’ll find it in the Dock Resources folder, which has many other icons you can change, including the Trash icon and indicators, which also appear below the app icons in the Dock. Good customization!
