Sorting photos into albums on your iOS devices is a great way to manage photos for different purposes, and some photo editing programs like Snapseed and Instagram create their own albums to keep things organized. It’s not uncommon for the purpose of albums to evolve, and what may have held only a bunch of photos for picture frame space on the iPad may have slowly evolved into a larger space for storing photos, making the name change appropriate.

However, renaming these photo albums isn’t entirely obvious, so here’s how to do it on iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

Rename photo albums on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

  1. Open the Photos app and go to the photo albums view (you may need to tap Show all to list all photo albums)
  2. Tap “Edit” in the corner of the screen
  3. Tap the name of the album you want to rename directly to call the keyboard
  4. Enter a new album name that you want to use for that photo album, then tap Done to make the change

You can name other photo albums in the same way if you want.

Note that you cannot change the name of the default photo albums, such as Camera Roll, Screenshots, Animated, Live Photos, Bursts, Time-lapse, etc., any of these default album names will be set in iOS.

You can only change the name of user-added photo albums.

Renaming an album on iPhone and iPod touch both look identical, and while doing this on iPad is basically the same process, it looks pretty different because albums are displayed a little differently because they have a larger screen size than iPhone.

In modern versions of iOS and iPadOS, this process looks a little different than before. For historical reasons, here are some screenshots of the photo album renaming process in previous iOS versions:

You can rename any album except Camera Roll, which contains all the photos on your device, and the stock’s default albums. In some cases, you don’t want to change the names you give, because some iOS image editing programs, like Snapseed, create their own albums for photos that have been modified or edited with those apps. However, as you may have guessed, if you rename albums created by applications and reuse the application, that application will generate a new album with the application name.
