The Galaxy Z Flip 4 focuses less on innovation and more on refinement. It features thinner bezels and flatter edges, making for a more premium-looking device. Again, it is still a fun phone. Samsung is aiming heavily at the young audience with the content creation features and overall feel of the phone, leaving the “mature” and “professional” look to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. From the outside, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 doesn’t look any different. If you love the folding clamshell design, you’ll probably fit right in.
The phone fits perfectly in your pocket without sticking out like the best big phones do. Like last year, Samsung has provided a number of color options for the Galaxy Z Flip 4. There is the Graphite option if you want something reasonable, but you could opt for the more vibrant Blue, Pink Gold or Bora Purple options.
Inside, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080p resolution and an adaptive refresh rate of 1-120Hz. Out of the box, the display is deeply saturated, as is typical for Samsung, to showcase the AMOLED’s color capabilities. The cover screen measures 1.9 inches and is also a Super AMOLED. It is ideal for those who have a photo as a background on that small panel. Buy the Galaxy Z Flip 4 right now at $899
With a 12MP main sensor that Samsung says is 65 percent brighter, the Galaxy Z Flip 4 has made marginal upgrades over the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The 12MP ultra-wide camera is the same, as is the 10MP internal selfie cam. From my tests, the software doesn’t seem to have changed much either. But the night mode has definitely changed. The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is capable of any task, even intense games like Genshin Impact. 8 GB of RAM seems low nowadays when there are gaming phones with 16 GB or 18 GB.
The Adobe Premiere Rush 4K-1080p transcoding test also shows a slight improvement of the Flip 4 over the Galaxy S22 Plus. However, Apple still has the edge. Samsung has listened to criticism about the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s battery life, which disappointed me at best. In battery life test, the Flip 3 lasted for only 5 hours and 43 minutes in the default mode with adaptive refresh rate.
The Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with OneUI 4.1 on top of Android 12. For the most part, this is an interface that is unlike any other. For the most part, it is similar to that of the Galaxy S22, but that is not all. The Flip 4 has access to several specific functions. Chief among these is Flex mode, which takes full advantage of foldable displays.
Flex mode is activated when you partially fold the Galaxy Z Flip 4, such as at a 45- or 90-degree angle. The current app splits, putting the main functionality in the top half and additional options in the bottom half. There is also a new trackpad function that helps navigate between apps more easily and quickly.
