Dell S2722DGM review

The Dell S2722DGM is a reasonably punchy and vibrant monitor, considering that it is a pure SDR panel. The strong inherent contrast certainly helps in this regard, ensuring that you won't feel awkward with games like Cyberpunk 2077, which support HDR, in SDR mode.

The Dell S2722DGM is a good 27 inch, 1440p monitors with VA panel. It’s a good monitor with excellent contrast, very good gray uniformity and an very good SDR color space. It only has decent reflection handling but greatest peak brightness so glare shouldn’t be a issue for most users. We’ve got 240Hz and beyond on the market now, but QHD at 165Hz monitors is still a significant upgrade for most gamers. Let’s take a look at what the Dell S2722DGM has to offer, and then decide whether you should skip it and go for the high-end models, or if it’s a great buy for frugal gamers.

It’s one of the best gaming monitors with a VA panel that we’ve tested so far, with fantastically low input lag, excellent response time at maximum refresh rate, and support for AMD’s FreeSync Premium variable refresh rate technology. However, the VA panel has few disadvantages, as there are noticeable black streaks in dark scenes and the picture deteriorates when viewed from an angle. Overall, though, it’s a good monitor that should please most human beings.

The Dell S2722DGM is a cheap gaming monitors. It has very good response time at maximum refresh rate, fantastically low input lag and supports AMD’s FreeSync technology with variable refresh rate for an almost uninterrupted gaming experience. There is an optional Black Frame Insertion feature that can eliminate motion blur.

Design

The Dell S2722DGM looks like a curved business monitor at first glance, but it actually has a unique aesthetic that sets it apart from the brand’s other computer monitors. The monitor has a matte black aesthetic, but it has a distinct vent design on the back. The display is frameless on three sides, but you’ll still see inner edges when it’s in use. It’s almost identical to the Dell S2721DGF, but the Dell S2722DGM has actually reduced its footprint by a few notches.

It’s much lighter and has a smaller base, so it uses less plastic and is more environmentally friendly. You won’t have to rearrange your desktop drastically if you buy this, but be mindful of the width if you have large speakers like bookshelf types. Build quality is great even though the Dell S2722DGM is mostly plastic. The panels are thick and rigid enough to prevent flexing, and there were no cosmetic imperfections on any of their major parts.

The stand, on the other hand, manages to keep the display stable so you don’t get dizzy in the heat of the moment. The Dell S2722DGM features an OSD joystick accompanied by hotkeys with customizable functions. This works great over the regular button layouts as you spend less time and effort tweaking the monitor. Note that the power button is on the bottom bezel to make using the monitor less confusing.

Display and Performance

The Dell S2722DGM features a 27-inch 1500r curved VA panel with a resolution of 2560 x 1440, a refresh rate of 165 Hz and a MPRT response time of 1 ms. The backlight is rated at 350 cd/m2 while the contrast ratio is advertised as 3000:1 like most VA panels. Surprisingly, this model isn’t marked with HDR compliance or compatibility, but that’s fine as true HDR is a lot more expensive anyway.

The 27-inch 1440p monitor category is awash with options, but it’s also the most popular right now, so it’s no surprise. This variant offers an upgrade in sharpness and detail without sacrificing legibility and visibility like 4K monitors in some cases. It’s nice and easy to read walls and text, but games and movies appear sharper and clearer even when you lower the graphics settings.

The Dell S2722DGM renders 100% sRGB with some extensions and around 80% Adobe RGB. Standard accuracy is decent for a budget gaming monitor, as the deltaE averages at just 2.67. It will be game-ready after a few minor tweaks, so we know gamers will love this monitor by default.

Assembly and Accessories

Dell continues its tradition of recyclable packaging with a clamshell box and molded pieces of pulp inside to keep everything safe. A piece of flexible foam protects the curved screen. The plate snaps onto the post, which is then bolted to a sturdy base. Quality cables for HDMI, DisplayPort and IEC are included for the internal power supply. The only visible indication of the Dell S2722DGM’s gaming intent is its hexagonal base.

A nice little flare where the pole attaches creates a floating look, and a small blue LED shines on the desk with a subtle glow. The bezel is 7mm thin on the top and sides and 16mm on the bottom, and has a small Dell logo as its only feature. A tiny power LED peeks out on the right side, which is just visible from the front. The four control buttons are located on the rear right with a joystick for menu navigation.

Calibration Settings

The default image mode of the Dell S2722DGM seems a bit cold and does not provide any calibration options. The best option is to select Custom Color. This change alone improves accuracy to the point where calibration is unnecessary. But since gain and offset sliders are available, it is good to use them to further reduce grayscale tracking error.

When we were finished, our pattern measured very well with the color gamut at sRGB+. It tracks sRGB closely and then oversaturates at the perimeter of the triangle; Red is particularly vivid. With HDR not available, this is a reasonable choice on the part of Dell monitors

Final Words

Overall the Dell S2722DGM is a fantastic 27 inch monitor and as it is a panel you get the most out of it both worlds of performance and image quality. In addition, the monitor offers you very good contrast with remarkable uniformity. Along with his FreeSync and G-Sync features give you a solid and versatile gaming experience Monitor. With a price range of around $300, the Dell S2722DGM is a very affordable monitor if you ever have one Budget and looking for a new gaming monitor for this year.
