What is Disk Signature Collision

Disk cloning is a fairly common way to upgrade to a bigger hard disk drive these days. Drives are cloned to make a similar copy so that both the original drive and the copy can be used at the same time. Also, the physical hard disk drive is virtualized with the help of many virtualization tools.

The physical hard drives are turned into virtual hard disk drives by virtualizing them, and the existing virtual hard disk drives are used to make copies of several virtual machines. Since these copies are the same, it’s possible that their disk signatures are also the same. The Disk Signature Collision problem can happen when you use two disks with the same signature at the same time.

Disk collisions don’t happen very often because Windows doesn’t let two disks work at the same time if they have the same disk signature. In older versions of Windows, like XP and Vista, the signature collision often went unnoticed because the Windows system would automatically replace the signature of the disk that reported duplicate signatures.
