The Fix ‘Netflix Not Working in Chrome’ Issue

In, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t have Netflix. While they may have other subscription services as well – Hulu, Spotify, HBO Now – Netflix is almost always a constant. Many of us may not even remember what you did for entertainment before Netflix hit the market. This dependence, of course, means that when something happens to the service it has a huge impact on your nightly plans.

If you’re trying to watch Netflix in Chrome and it won’t load, you’re not alone. It happens on my PC all the time which can be really annoying when trying to enjoy a night listening to the latest Netflix originals. While most of these issues can be fixed by speeding up Chrome and getting a more stable connection, it’s also a good idea to check out Netflix-specific fixes, just to make sure your PC is up and running properly.

Troubleshooting Netflix on Chrome

Netflix works perfectly 99% of the time, but that percentage can have a huge impact. While my error was “There was an unexpected error. Please reload the page and try again. ‘I know there are other mistakes that are happening. I’ll try to cover most of them here.

Here are a few things you can try if your Netflix isn’t working in Chrome.

Refresh page

The first thing to do is to force a refresh of the page. Chrome consumes a lot of memory and can freeze occasionally if a lot is going on. If reading stops and you see any error, forcing a refresh tells Chrome to reload the page as if it was the first time. A forced refresh is different from a “normal” F5 refresh because it only reloads the page using existing data.

Using Ctrl + R on Windows bypasses the cache and forces a full reload of the page. For Mac, use Cmd + Shift + R to achieve the same goal. This will reload the page and hopefully restart reading without the error.

Clear Chrome Cache

If reloading the page around the cache does not work, try clearing the cache completely. It will clean up any potentially corrupted files that are preventing Netflix from working in Chrome. There is a specific error code for this, C7053-1803, but clearing the cache can work for many browser read issues.

Open a new tab in Chrome and type or paste “chrome: // settings / clearBrowserData” into the URL bar. Select All the time and cookies and site data as well as cached images and files. Select Clear data. You will need to reconnect to Netflix and restart the stream, but it should work fine now.

Try Chrome’s incognito mode

For some reason, using incognito mode may work where clearing cache does not. Incognito mode uses a different profile with no cache to work and will only accept session cookies. In theory, this does nothing but clear the cache, but it can work around the issues with Netflix.

  1. Right-click on your Chrome icon and select Incognito Mode.
  2. Go to Netflix and sign in.
  3. Start a stream and see if it reads without errors.

Check your extensions

If you’ve added a new extension to Chrome and Netflix suddenly decides to stop working, it’s worth checking out. Disable the extension, force the page to reload, and see if reading works normally again. If so, remove the extension. If not, try the next step in the list.

Try a different Chrome profile

I haven’t had to use this method before because clearing the cache usually does that for me, but I was reliably told by a buddy that it works too. Sometimes an issue with your Chrome profile can cause video playback issues. Creating a new Chrome user profile can work around this problem.

  1. Select Settings from the Chrome menu.
  2. Select Manage Other People in the People area and select Add Person.
  3. Select a name and profile picture, and then select Save.
  4. You will be asked to log in using the new persona

If you don’t have an additional Google Account, you can also use Chrome as a guest. You can sign out of Chrome or go to Contacts in settings, select Manage other people and Browse as guest at the bottom of the pop-up window.

Try using another browser or the Netflix app

You can be associated with Chrome, but it is not associated with you. If that doesn’t work well with Netflix, try a different browser. If you are using Windows, try the Netflix app. It has been redesigned and improved a lot and now works very well.

Any of these fixes should do the trick if Netflix isn’t working in Chrome. Do you have any other suggestions? Tell us about it below if you do!
