To play video frame by frame, you can press a hot key. First, open a video in VLC by selecting Media> Open File; then play the clip. Now press the E key. The video will pause. Now, each additional press of the E button will advance the video one frame. To restart the video, just press the space bar.
E is the default keyboard shortcut for Frame by Frame option, but you can customize this keyboard shortcut and others. Click Tools> Preferences> Keyboard Shortcuts to open a list of keyboard shortcuts like below. Then scroll to the next image in that window. Double click on it to open the window below.
Just press the new shortcut key for the next image to configure it. Click the Save button in the Simple Preferences window. Then you can press the new keyboard shortcut frame by frame.
You can also activate the following frame with a button on the toolbar. If it’s not already in your reading toolbar, click Tools> Customize Interface to open the window below. Scroll through the list of toolbar items until you find the Frame by Frame option. Drag this button somewhere on row 2 so that you can select the option from the playback toolbar.
You can now browse video frame by frame with a keyboard shortcut or the toolbar button.
