Chrome OS is a cloud-centric operating system for your Chromebook, Chromebox, or Chromebit. But if you’re like me, many of your files are accessible on your home network, but not necessarily in the public cloud connected to the Internet. For Windows users to engage with Chromebook, Google is building many useful features into Chrome OS. Recently, they brought network file sharing to the stable channel of Chrome OS via SMB (Server Message Block).

This means you can seamlessly access network files and folders without having to switch to developer mode or Canary channel. We are talking about movies, photos, personal documents, my huge music collection, etc. In the past, we could have loaded our entire movie collection onto a computer’s hard drive. But with a Chromebook, you’re in luck if you can only get an HD movie or two on the local storage drive.

That’s not a bug, of course: the Chromebook was never designed for that. We have no problem playing commercial music and movies on the go with my Chromebook. But when we’re home, there’s no point in uploading my stuff to the cloud (perhaps for a fee) to view on my Chromebook.

How to connect Chromebook to a shared network folder

  • Open the Files app on your Chromebook and click on the 3-dot menu in the top right corner. Then click “Add New Service” and open “SMB File Sharing”.
  • In “File Share URL”, enter the network share path of the folder that we got from the previous section. And under “Display Name”, rename it to the folder name just for convenience.
  • Next, enter your Windows account username and password. And in case you are using a Microsoft account online on your Windows PC like me, you will need to provide Microsoft credentials. Please note that you cannot enter the PIN code in the password field.
  • After that, click the “Add” button and voila, the Windows shared folder will be active on your Chromebook with all the files inside. You can access it from the left panel just like any other folder on your Windows PC.
