Check How to Fix ‘Dark Mode Not Working in Gmail and Other Google Apps’ Issue
It looks like starting Monday a server-side fix will be rolled out that will restore Gmail to dark mode. We have had several reports of theme settings returning without user interaction in the last few hours. There have also been instances where some have lost the dark theme this morning only to be brought back a short time later. Staring at screens all day can make the bright light feel a bit on your eyes. Switching to dark mode can help combat the problem and even save battery life. There are several ways that Gmail users can do this. However, the method you use depends on the device you are using.
For example, if you have an iPhone, you will no longer be able to use dark mode in the Gmail app. However, there is a workaround that you can use to get the dark mode effect from your device’s system settings. But those on Android or desktop can access the Dark Mode option from the Themes menu in the app itself.
Check the system version
If your Android device has Android 10, most apps, including Gmail, should be able to switch to the dark theme. Similarly, those using iOS 11 and above can experience dark mode for various Google apps. To check the version of your device’s operating system, go to the Settings app.
Always install the latest update on your applications
In case your apps don’t have dark mode as of now, check if you have installed the latest update on apps. If you are using an Android device, touch the Play Store app> Menu button (hamburger)> Apps & games. If you are using an Apple device, go to the App Store and check for the latest update for the respective applications that you have on your device.
Restart your smartphone / tablet
So according to you your device has the latest system update and the latest version for all apps. Then try restarting your device. Once the device restarts, check if the Google apps have the option for dark mode.
Clear cache
Another very useful method to get things working is to clear the cache of any Google app you are trying to enable cache clearing. It is easy to do. This process will clear up the clutter caused by temporary files and should make the new app updates work perfectly.
- Go to Settings app> Apps & notification
- Tap See all apps
- From the list of applications, choose the Google application you want
- Touch Storage & Cache
- Now tap on Clear cache
Manually configure dark mode
If you have an Android smartphone with the latest Android OS, i.e. Android 10, you can manually activate the dark mode from the Settings app of the device.
- Since I use a OnePlus 6T with the latest version of Android 10, I went to Settings> Personalization
- Tap on Preset Theme
- Select Dark Tint> tap Apply
Depending on the device you use, go to Settings and check the Display options. You should definitely get an option for dark mode if your phone is running Android 10.
Check dark mode in app settings
This is very simple.
- Open any option of the Google application (for example, I opened Google Fit)
- Touch the profile
- Now tap on the gear icon and scroll down to the last option Theme
- Tap it to select your choice of theme.
- Since I want to choose the dark mode, I selected the dark mode and it automatically activates the dark mode.
It’s that easy. Similarly, for any other Google application like Gmail, the messages check the setting of the Theme option. Below, you can find an option to change the theme to dark mode.
