Check How to Install Popcorn Time for Ubuntu
Popcorn Time is an open source Netflix-inspired torrent streaming app for Linux, Mac, and Windows. With normal torrents, you have to wait for the download to finish before you can watch the videos. Popcorn time is different. It uses torrents, but it allows you to watch the videos (almost) instantly. It’s like watching videos on streaming websites like YouTube or Netflix. Here you do not have to wait until the download is complete.
If you want to watch movies online without those creepy ads, Popcorn Time is a good alternative. Please note that the quality of the stream depends on the number of seeds available. Popcorn Time also offers a nice interface where you can browse the available movies, TV series and other content. If you’ve ever used Netflix on Linux, you’ll find it to be a similar experience. In this article we will show you how to install Popcorn Time for Ubuntu
How to install Popcorn Time for Ubuntu
Install dependencies
To avoid errors like “Popcorn-Time: Error loading shared libraries”: libgconf-2.so.4: Unable to open shared object file: No such file or directory” you need to install some dependencies with this command:
- sudo apt update && sudo apt install libcanberra-gtk-module libgconf-2-4 libatomic1
download popcorn time
- You can download Popcorn Time from the official website. The download link is available on the home page itself.
Install popcorn time
Once you’ve downloaded Popcorn Time, it’s time to start using it. The downloaded file is a tar file that consists of an executable file, among other files. You can extract this tar file anywhere the Linux convention is to install additional software in the /opt directory.
- Create a new directory in /opt:
- sudo mkdir /opt/popcorntime
- Now change to the download directory.
- The new Popcorn Time 4.4 is available in zip format. Unzip the file as follows to the directory specified in the Linux terminal:
- sudo unzip Popcorn-Time-0.4.4-linux64.zip -d /opt/popcorntime/
- Since some readers have stated that Popcorn Time 4.4 will not work on their systems (it’s fine on my system), I recommend that you install and run the dependencies mentioned in step 0 sudo apt-get -f install thereafter.
Make Popcorn Time available to everyone
- You want everyone on your system to be able to run Popcorn Time without sudo access, right? You must create a symbolic link to the executable file in the /usr/bin directory.
- sudo ln -sf /opt/popcorntime/Popcorn-Time /usr/bin/Popcorn-Time
Create a desktop launcher for Popcorn Time
- So far so good. But you also want to see Popcorn Time in the application menu, add it to your favorite application list, etc.
- To do this, you must create an entry on the desktop.
- Open a terminal and create a new file called popcorntime.desktop in /usr/share/applications.
- You can use any command line text editor. Ubuntu installed Nano by default so you can use it.
- sudo nano /usr/share/applications/popcorntime.desktop
- Insert the following lines here:
- [Desktop Entry]
- Version = 1.0
- Type = Application
- terminal = false
- Name = Popcorn time.
- Exec = /usr/bin/Popcorn-Time
- Icon = /opt/popcorntime/popcorn.png
- Categories = Application;
- If you’ve used the nano editor, save it with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + X. When prompted to save, type Y, then press Enter again to save and exit.
- We are almost there. One last thing you need to do here is find the right Popcorn Time icon. Therefore, you can download a Popcorn Time icon and save it as popcorn.png in the /opt/.Popcorn time Directory.
- You can do this with the following command:
- sudo wget -O /opt/popcorntime/popcorn.png https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/df/Pctlogo.png
- That’s it. Now you can search for Popcorn Time and click on it to start.
