Check How to Restore Deleted Messages on iPhone

Let’s be honest; Most people send and receive a lot of text messages or iMessages every day. Whether talking to friends, family, or co-workers, most of us have a graveyard of old text messages lying around. After we send them (or read the ones we receive once), we rarely look at those messages again. After a while, most of us can clean up our messages and delete them from our phones. Not only can this clean up your phone’s message menu and make it less crowded, but it can also save some storage space on your phone, as those long conversations can be quite consuming.

However, what if you find that you really need to view or reference a previous message after you’ve deleted it? Whether the message contains some important links, some photos you didn’t save, or many other things, you might think you’re out of luck. If you delete a message or conversation on your iPhone, it’s not deleted right away (just like your pictures aren’t completely deleted right away).

Instead, your messages are simply marked for deletion, which still makes them inaccessible and invisible to us. They still exist on our phones for a short time until finally the files are overwritten or permanently deleted. Now you know a little more about what happens when you delete a message.

Use an iCloud backup

Below are the steps you can take to recover deleted text messages on your iPhone using an iCloud backup. Before we begin the process, it’s important to note that you must have Messages enabled as part of your iCloud backups in order to restore your old text messages from the cloud.

  • Go to Settings and then tap on your Apple ID profile at the top.
  • Open iCloud > Manage Storage > Backups, and then select the backup that was made before the date you deleted the text messages you want to recover.
  • Scroll down to find the Messages backup and make sure it shows up with some data.
  • Now, you need to restart your iPhone. This will delete all stored content and data. Therefore, you should only continue if you have them available in the backup file that contains your deleted messages.
  • If you’re sure, go to Settings > General > Transfer or reset iPhone > Erase all content and settings.
  • Your iPhone will now reboot and it will take a while to come back. It will then ask if you want to recover from a backup. Choose the correct backup from there.

In case you don’t want to erase all of your content and data on your iPhone but want to restore messages stored in iCloud, you can recover them by signing in to iCloud.com. Below are the steps on how you can do it.

Using iCloud.com

  • Sign in to iCloud.com with your Apple ID and password.
  • Go to Text messages and find the ones you want to restore. The Text messages option will be visible only if you have turned on backups of your text messages.
  • Now, you will be prompted to turn off Messages backup by visiting iCloud settings after going into Settings and then your Apple ID profile. You will see the list of content that you are backing up to iCloud. Just tap Messages there to turn off text message backups.
  • You will now be prompted to download your text messages locally to your iPhone. Select Disable and download messages in the pop-up message. This will download all existing messages, including those you have deleted from your phone.

It’s worth noting that this option only works if your iPhone hasn’t been backed up to iCloud recently. Otherwise, you will not be able to receive the deleted messages as they will no longer be available on iCloud.com and will be replaced by the new texts you received on your iPhone.
