Check How to set up Do Not Disturb (DND) Mode in Slack

Slack is a workplace communication tool, “a central place for messages, tools, and files.” This means that Slack is an instant messaging system with many plugins for other workplace tools. However, plugins are not required to use Slack, as its main functionality is to talk to other people. There are two methods of chatting in Slack: channels (group chat) and direct message or DM (person-to-person chat). Slack does the rest by automatically enabling DND mode at the specified time period.

Also, there is more than one method to enable the same thing. The app comes preloaded with some useful shortcuts to enable DND. The acronym DND has several popular meanings, including Do Not Disturb, Do Not Delete, Drunk and Disorderly, and Dungeons & Dragons. More information on each of these DND definitions can be found here.

How to set up Do Not Disturb (DND) mode in Slack

Enable Do Not Disturb on your desktop

To switch Slack to Do Not Disturb mode on the desktop app, go to the top right corner where your photo is located. Click this and a dropdown menu will appear. Hover over the “Pause notifications” option. This will expand more options allowing you to pause notifications between 30 minutes and two hours.

There’s also the ability to choose an “until tomorrow” option or a “custom” time frame for muting notifications. Slack recently added this feature that allows users to set a notification schedule that repeats every day. This helps with work-life balance by automatically stopping notifications at the end of your workday.

If you want to turn off the Do Not Disturb setting and turn on notifications, go back to the top right corner and hover over “Pause notifications.” It will now give you the option to disable Do Not Disturb mode. You can then catch up on all new messages in the top left sidebar of Slack, below your workspace name.

Enable Do Not Disturb on your mobile device

When you use the Slack app on mobile devices (either iOS or Android), changing your notification preferences looks different, but it’s just as simple as the desktop app. When you open the app, take a look at the various options at the bottom of the screen. In the bottom right corner, you will see “You” – select that option. A menu with various settings will open. Second from the top, you’ll see “Pause notifications” next to a bell icon.

When you select this, you will be given multiple options that allow you to customize the time period for which to snooze notifications. You can further customize the settings by selecting the “Customize” option. Unlike the desktop app, the mobile app doesn’t allow users to set a daily scheduled “Do Not Disturb” mode, but you can still disable notifications on a daily basis to prevent your iPhone from ringing with notifications when out of hours.
