You can share an Internet/network connection from your PC to an Ethernet gateway on a Windows 10 PC if your PC has at least one Ethernet port and one other network adapter (usually Wi-Fi). The most common configuration is to share a Wi-Fi connection with the Ethernet port. This can be useful if you don’t have a DHCP-enabled router that the Ethernet gateway can connect to (because the Ethernet gateway works with DHCP enabled by default).
In many situations, you can connect all your devices to the same Wi-Fi network, so getting them online won’t be a problem. But what if one of your devices can’t access the connection, either because you don’t have Wi-Fi there, there’s no Wi-Fi available, or access is restricted (like in a hotel that only allows one connection per room)? Internet Connection Sharing
- Connect the two computers via a standard ethernet cable. (You had to use a crossover cable before, but PCs are smart enough these days not to require one.) Then go to the Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel, “Change adapter settings”, right-click on the adapter that has the Internet connection (WiFi in my case), and click Properties.
- In the Properties box, click the Sharing tab and check the “Allow other network users to connect…” box. Next, click the dropdown menu under “Home Network Connection” and select the Ethernet adapter that is connecting your two PCs.
- You should do that! If it doesn’t work for some reason, go to the adapter settings in the Network and Sharing Center on the PC you’re trying to connect to, right-click the Ethernet adapter, disable it, and then enable it again.

- If that doesn’t work for you, then instead of fiddling with things like setting a static IP, you can jump straight to this similar method, which should be faster.
- First, disable connection sharing on your network by unchecking the “Allow other network users to connect…” box on your connected adapter and pressing OK. Now, in the “Change adapter settings” window, hold down the “Ctrl” key, then click on the adapter that is connected to the Internet and the one you are trying to connect to.
- Next, right-click on one of the adapters and click “Bridge Connections.” That should do it. Again, you may need to disable and then re-enable the network adapter on the PC seeking to receive the connection for this to work.
Wifi
- If your computer has WiFi but is not in an optimal location to get a good signal from the router, you can easily turn another computer into a WiFi hotspot. To do this, go to “Settings -> Network -> Mobile Hotspot”, then turn on the “Share my Internet connection” slider. Make a note of the network name and password, then simply connect to the network as you would a normal WiFi network.
