Hello survivors, we are back today with another guide for Project Zomboid, the extreme survival zombie apocalypse RPG. Today we are talking about hot wired cars. To give gamers an immediate introduction to short-wired cars, I’ve included a tl;dr at the top. If you’re still having trouble accessing a vehicle, read on as we go into more detail with screenshots on how to drive vehicles without a key in Project Zomboid.
One of the major updates to Project Zomboid was Build 39, which introduced drivable vehicles for the first time. Project Zomboid is set in Knox County, which closely resembles the Louisville area of Northern Kentucky. With a huge map to explore, cars are an essential survival tool in the zombie apocalypse. Although many of them are scattered throughout cities and suburbs, finding a key to start one is a real challenge. Fortunately, it is possible to run a car without a key if players know how to short-circuit it.
While any survivor in Project Zomboid can start a running car engine once they find its key, short wiring is a bit more difficult to pull off. They need the right skills to start with, as only a character with Electric 1 and Mechanical 2 can attempt to short-circuit a vehicle.
find a vehicle
- Of course, in order to connect a car, you have to find one first! Vehicles can be found inside or near houses and buildings. The chance of a vehicle spawning near houses is pretty slim. So your best chance of finding a vehicle is to go to a local shop or store and head to the parking lot.
- Most larger buildings like schools and gas stations have a parking lot where there should be at least 1 or 2 vehicles. Once you find a car you want to connect, you need to enter it! After finding a vehicle, the first thing to do is make sure the key isn’t lying around. Sometimes you can find the keys by looking on the ground near a parked car. You can also often find your keys by looking for them in the glove compartment of a car or by leaving them in one of the passenger seats.
- You can access a keyless car by approaching one of the doors. Once you are near one of the doors, right click on it and select the option to break the window. An important tip for breaking windows is that you should break a window that is not on the driver’s side. If you break the window on the driver’s side, the zombies will be able to attack you immediately when they reach the side of the vehicle.
- Also keep in mind that breaking a window when you don’t have a gun in your hand can cause hand injuries such as bleeding or even stuck glass. Always make sure you have a gun in your hand to avoid injury.
Navigating to the Hotwire menu
- Once you’re seated in the car, you can hold down the “V” key to bring up the vehicle interaction menu. If you’re not already there, take the driver’s seat by selecting the “Change Seat” option in the radial menu. Once you’re in the driver’s seat, open the menu and go to the option in the top left corner, which is for Hotwiring.
- If you have a fairly new character who doesn’t have enough skills to connect yet, you’ll see a message that says, “Needs key or electrical level 1 and mechanical level 2 to connect.” That’s exactly what it sounds like. To be able to connect cars, you need to increase your mechanics skill level to 2 and your electronics skill level to 1. A quick way to increase your mechanics level is to read the mechanics for beginners book and just perform tasks on a car, such as changing a tire or removing parts. An easy way to increase your electronics skill level is to buy a screwdriver and take apart small electronics like clocks and radios.
