Check How to Sort in Google Sheets by Multiple Columns

Sorting data in Google Sheets is a simple process. You can sort a single column (alphabetically or by numerical value in ascending/descending order) or multiple columns (alphabetically or by numerical value in ascending/descending order) (based on one of the columns). However, what if you have multiple columns? and you want to order them all at the same time? Suppose you have a data set like the following and you want to sort it first by area and then by sales. This way you will have all the records for each region in one place and the sales can be sorted from highest to lowest within each zone.

Sort by multiple columns in Google Sheets

Here are the steps to sort by multiple columns in Google sheets:

  • Select the entire dataset (A1:C13 in this example)
  • Click the Data tab
  • Click the Sort Range option
  • In the ‘Sort Range’ dialog, click the ‘Data has header row’ option. No need to check this in case you don’t have a header row
  • In the Sort By dropdown, click Region and sort order as A -> Z
  • Click the ‘Add another sort column’ option
  • In the ‘then by’ dropdown select Sales and sort order as Z -> A (since we want the ranking from highest to lowest sales value)
  • Click Order
