According to Twitch themselves, they have over 100 million unique visitors per month who devour over 16 billion minutes of content. Among these users, there are around 2 million broadcasters streaming everything from basic games to competitive multiplayer. The site is clean and easy to use, which adds to its appeal.

Stream a PC game on Twitch

There are a few prerequisites that you will need to stream a PC game on Twitch. You’ll need decent PC hardware, a good connection, and a Twitch account. The company recommends a minimum PC specification of an Intel Core i5-4670 processor or AMD equivalent and at least 8 GB of DDR3 RAM.

You will also need a stable internet connection with a download capacity of at least 2 Mbps. More would be better, but it’s the less you need for decent performance.

You’ll also need a streaming app to get everything working. Three of the best are Open Broadcaster Software (OBS), Gameshow, and XSplit. OBS is free and open source but requires a bit of configuration. The Gameshow is supposed to be pretty good but I’ve never used it. XSplit is good too but needs a premium subscription to access its best features. I will be using OBS for this guide.

  1. Create a Twitch account and get a stream key. You will need it to be able to stream your games. Once signed up, you should see a dashboard, select the Feed Key tab, and tap Show Key. Keep the page open for a minute.
  2. Download and install OBS.
  3. Open OBS as administrator and select Settings from the menu at the top left.
  4. Configure your name, default language and anything else you want to customize.
  5. Select Encoding from the left menu and “Use CBR” and “Enable CBR padding”. Use AAC with bit rate 128 for the audio codec. If you have a lot of bandwidth, you can play around with these settings a bit if you want.
  6. Select Delivery Settings from the OBS left menu.
  7. Select Twitch as the stream and tap Optimize.
  8. Add your Twitch Stream Key in the box titled “ Play Path / Stream Key, ” then press OK.
  9. Close the settings.
  10. Right click on Sources at the bottom center of the main OBS window.
  11. Select Add, Capture Game, and select the game you want to stream from the Application drop-down list.
  12. Select Monitor Capture to view everything that is happening on your computer screen.
  13. Add a stream and select Capture Video to view yourself through your webcam while you play. This is optional but provides a bit more interest in the flow.
  14. Select Stream Preview to configure everything before uploading. Make the changes you need and make sure your webcam is positioned correctly.
  15. Select Start Streaming from the OBS main dashboard to be your stream.

There are a ton of settings you can play around with in OBS, but the ones listed above will get you up and running in the shortest time possible. If you want to dig a little deeper into the setup, this Twitch page has everything you probably want to know about setting up OBS for Twitch.

Adding the additional source feed of you on webcam is optional, but when watching Twitch feeds those with the player commenting on the camera are by far the most entertaining. Just make sure you have a good webcam and set it up so that there is very little background distraction. Your audience will divide their attention between the gameplay and your comments, so they shouldn’t be distracted by what’s going on behind you.

OBS takes a bit of setup, but since it’s free, it’s a very powerful tool to use if you want to stream a PC game to Twitch. If you’ve taken a look at this Twitch setup page, there are literally hundreds of settings you can tweak to improve or customize your feed. The instructions above will get you out to broadcast quickly, but it’s likely that as you gain more experience you’ll change these settings accordingly.
