VLC Media Player (formerly VideoLAN Client and commonly known simply as VLC) is a free, open source, portable, cross-platform media player software and streaming media server developed by the VideoLAN project. VLC is available for desktop operating systems and mobile platforms such as Android, iOS, and iPadOS. VLC is also available on digital distribution platforms such as the Apple App Store, Google Play, and the Microsoft Store.

Chromecast is a range of digital media players developed by Google. The devices, designed as small dongles, can play audiovisual content streamed over the Internet on a high-definition television or home audio system. The user controls the playback with a mobile device or PC through web and mobile applications that support the Google Cast protocol or by issuing commands through the Google Assistant. Alternatively, the content can be mirrored from the Google Chrome web browser on a PC or from the screen of some Android devices.

VLC media player is and probably always will be the best free way to watch DVD and media files on your computer or Android phone. However, if you are using it as your default player, you already know that Chromecast is not currently supported on PC or Android.

Don’t worry, you can use VLC media player to watch media content and cast it to your TV via Chromecast; it just takes a little manipulation.

How to cast VLC to Chromecast (Mac or PC)

  • Open the VLC media player app and click “Playback” in the main options menu at the top. In the Playback drop-down menu, click “Renderer”.
  • A pop-up window should appear next to the “Renderer” option: select your Chromecast device. If you don’t see your Chromecast listed, click “Scan.”
  • Open a file to play it in VLC. If the message “Insecure site” appears, click “View certificate” and “Permanently accept”.

How to cast VLC to Chromecast (PC only)

You can use the above-mentioned method for Mac and PC, and PC users can also perform the steps to cast with a few right-clicks:

  • Start playing the media in VLC that you want to cast to Chromecast.
  • Right-click on the video, then select “Playback,” “Renderer,” and the name of the Chromecast.

Your video should play immediately. You can use the VLC buttons to control video playback on your Chromecast-connected TV. If you can’t locate the Chromecast in VLC, make sure your computer and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network; Only TVs connected to Chromecast on the same network will be listed. If you’re still having a problem, you may need to disconnect from your computer’s VPN as well, if you’re using one.
