How to Enable or Disable Closed Captioning on Plex Media Player

If you’re a Plex user, you may want to know how to turn on or off closed captioning on Plex Media Player. With closed captions, you can enjoy your favorite movies and TV shows even in noisy environments, or if you’re hard of hearing. In this guide, we’ll show you how to easily adjust your caption settings and toggle closed captions on or off while streaming media content.

How to Set Up Closed Captioning on Plex

Follow these steps to configure closed captioning settings on your Plex Media Player:

  1. Make sure your Plex Media Server is running.
  2. Access your server by visiting https://app.plex.tv/desktop in your web browser or right-clicking the Plex Media Server taskbar icon and selecting “Open Plex…”.
  3. Click on “Languages” in the left-hand menu.
  4. In the next screen, choose your preferred subtitle and audio language from the drop-down menus. You can also decide whether you want subtitles to be displayed automatically or manually.
  5. Click on “Save Changes”.
  6. Next, click on the screwdriver and wrench-shaped icon at the top right to access the settings menu.
  7. Choose “Account” from the menu on the left.
  8. In the middle of the screen, click on “Audio and Subtitle Settings”.
  9. Here, you can enable or disable automatic captions and choose preferences for subtitles for the hearing impaired, as well as forced or unforced subtitles.
  10. Click on “Save Changes”.

Once you’ve made these changes, Plex will apply your default subtitle style and language settings.

Turning Closed Captions On or Off During Streaming

After configuring your settings, closed captions will automatically appear on every video you watch, or you can choose to disable them. However, there may be times when you want to enable or disable closed captions for a specific movie or TV show. Here’s how:

  1. Start watching the video.
  2. If the top and bottom bars disappear, move your cursor to make them reappear.
  3. At the bottom right of the screen, click on the button that looks like an audio mixer (three vertical bars with dots above it).
  4. A playback settings menu will appear. Click on the drop-down menu next to “Subtitles” to select the desired subtitle track or choose “None” to turn off closed captions.

That’s it! With just a few clicks, you can easily enable or disable closed captions while streaming media content on Plex.
