YouTube introduced picture-in-picture mode for Android in 2018. Three years later, the feature finally made its way to iOS. To use YouTube Picture-in-Picture on Android phones, you must have YouTube Premium or be in the US watching ad-supported PiP content. Your device must also be running Android 8.0 (Oreo) or later for this to work.
PiP should be enabled by default if your device meets the above criteria. However, if you need to turn it back on and can’t remember how, this is how you can do it.
- In the Settings application, go to “Applications and notifications”.
- Now search YouTube. This could be at the top of the menu under “Recently Opened Applications”, or you may have to select “See all applications” and find it listed there.

You can also control a few things from this miniaturized player by tapping the video. Play / Pause, Forward and Rewind options are still in the center of the screen.
To return to full screen mode, tap the button in the upper right corner of the player or close the player by tapping the X in the upper left corner of the screen. You can also close the player by swiping left or right on iOS, or by dragging it to the bottom of the screen on Android.
