Safari users in the iOS world probably already know that you can close a single browser tab by either tapping the (X) button or swiping the tab away from the left side of the screen on iPhone or iPad. But what if you have a bunch of browser tabs open at once that you want to close all together? Instead of swiping each one away or tapping a set of closing buttons, you can stretch all open Safari tabs with a quick trick.

  1. In Safari, tap the overlapping squares to display the Safari tab screen
  2. Tap the “Private” button
  3. In the dialog, select “Close All”

This immediately closes all tabs open in Safari while placing the user in private browsing mode. Since not everyone wants to browse the web in private mode, which prevents caching and data from being saved to iPhone or iPad, you may want to return to normal browsing mode in Safari by tapping back to the square icon on that browser tab and then tapping “Private” again to exit privacy mode and return to normal browsing.

While you can certainly tap the (x) button repeatedly or swipe a set as well, this is the fastest way to close all open Safari tabs and pages we know about iPad or iPhone, at least on iOS 7 or later. If there’s any other way that doesn’t use the privacy trick, we haven’t seen it yet.
