JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Charge 5 2024: review, features, pros and cons

A quick look at our list of the best Bluetooth speakers shows that the JBL Charge 5 and the JBL Flip 6 are two of the best on the market. We’ve put both the Charge 5 and the Flip 6 through a lot of tests, and we’re happy to say that they sound great for the price. Not much of a surprise, since JBL is a high-end brand that usually gives good value for the money. Even though these JBL speakers are from different lines, they came out about 8 months apart, so some of their features are the same.

Bluetooth 5.1 is used to connect the two devices. The JBL Portable app can be used to update their firmware. This makes it possible to use them with the app’s equaliser. JBL makes some of the best Bluetooth speakers on the planet, and its latest model is no different.

The JBL Flip 6 is a simple, tough, and great-sounding speaker that works just as well indoors as it does outside. Even though we think the JBL Flip 6 is great, it doesn’t have a built-in phone charger, which may be useful for people who like to be outside.

Price and availability

The Charge 5 was released in April 2021 and cost £160, $180, or $200. As of December 2022, it could be bought for about £130 or $150. The Flip 6 is a newer and less expensive model from JBL. It came out for the first time in November 2022 and cost £130, $130, or AU$200. So, prices are pretty much the same. But, as we’ll see, the Charge 5 gives you more for your money you can buy both the product from JBL’s store.

JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Charge 5 Design

JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Charge 5

The Flip 6 and the Charge 5 are both JBL Bluetooth speakers with the same look. When we put the JBL Flip 6 next to the Charge 5, it’s easy to tell them apart from the outside. On the Flip 5, the logo was small and not very noticeable. On the Flip 6, the logo is much bigger and more noticeable. The Charge 5 has the same tubular shape and the same new look.

The passive bass radiators on the new Flip feel cool, textured, and metallic instead of smooth and rubbery. Also, it’s a lot lighter than the Charge 5. (550g vs 960g). If you want to take this speaker on a long hike, you might want to keep that in mind.

Lastly, they both come in the same nine colour combinations: Dusty Pink, Grey Stone, River Teal, Fiesta Red, Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, Steel White, Forest Green, and Squad. So you have a lot of options.

JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Charge 5 Sound Quality

JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Charge 5

We’ve spent a lot of time with both the Charge and the Flip 6, so we can attest to their abilities. However, there are a few small differences between the two. The Charge 5 has a flexible sound. Tracks have a lot of impact, vocals are lively and feel like they are in the right place in a mix that is big for a speaker this size.

We put on British Sea Power’s “Tiger King,” which has a sad soundscape, and the cymbals and drum crashes are detailed and accurate. This shows that the Charge 5 can do both “oomph” and “bass clout” and “delicacy” and “nuance.”

The Flip 6 show us how fast, agile, and fun they can be. There’s a lot of power and energy across all the frequencies, and any perceived fullness goes away after the speaker has been properly broken in for a night, revealing a surprising full-bodied low end.

The keys, kick drum, and lilting guitar at the beginning of Feed Me To The Lions by Amateur Theatre Group give the song a nice three-dimensional feel. During “Curtains,” the Flip 6 gives a surprising accurate idea of where each band member is in the soundstage. Overall, the Charge 5 sounds much fuller and is easier on the top end because it is bigger and has more power.

JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Charge 5 Battery Life and Connectivity

JBL Flip 6 vs JBL Charge 5

If you care most about battery life, the Charge 5 is the best speaker for you. It can play music for 20 hours, while the Flip 6 can only play music for 12 hours. It also has a built-in powerbank so you can charge your phone or tablet.

Both speakers have Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity, which makes them easy to pair with your devices. The JBL Portable app that comes with the speakers lets you check for software updates, change the equaliser settings with sliders for bass, mid, and treble frequencies, turn on and off the feedback tone, and read the user guide. You can also use this app to turn on the PartyBoost feature.

Which one should you consider?

The JBL Charge 5 just sounds better all around because its transducer speaker is bigger and it has passive radiators. In addition, compared to the JBL Flip 6, it has a better battery. But because you can’t change the EQ on the JBL Charge 5, the JBL Flip 6 has more ways to change how the music sounds. The JBL Flip 6 is also easier to carry around, and its strong strap lets you attach it to almost anything.

No matter what the specs are, both speakers sound great, so deciding which one to buy comes down to personal preference and budget. Keep in mind that the JBL Charge 5 costs more, but the upgrade is well worth it.

The JBL Flip 6 is the cheaper option, but it does a great job because it has the same tweeter as the JBL Charge 5 and sounds just as open. Both speakers are great, but the JBL Charge 5 is better all around.
