League of Legends review

It is an engaging game of cat and mouse that makes me feel like a criminal mastermind. Success is not just a prefabricated plan that comes to fruition.

League of Legends is one of the first standalone multiplayer battle arena games, based on the very popular DotA map for Warcraft 3. Despite being one of the oldest standalone MOBAs, League of Legends remains the most popular. In fact, League of Legends is the most popular game for PC in the world, with more than 67 million monthly active users. League of Legends, like all other games in the MOBA genre, mixes aspects of real-time strategy with RPG elements.

The game principle is quite simple: two teams of five players each compete against each other and win by destroying the opponent’s main structure, the so-called “nexus”. Individual games usually last 35-45 minutes, but in some cases they can last over an hour. With an ever-growing number of playable champions (over 161) and radical changes every season, League of Legends never gets boring.

League of Legends is immensely successful because it is fun at all difficulty levels. The basic principle of the game is easy to understand, but to master it takes years of dedication. Competitive players can prove their skills in ranked games and move up in the rankings. Currently, there are the following ranking divisions: Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Master and Challenger.

Gameplay

The objective of a LoL game is to destroy the opponent’s Nexus. It is the main building located inside their base and dies very quickly if attacked. However, reaching it is not easy. You need to destroy numerous towers along the way and fight the enemy team. Only by destroying an entire lane of enemy structures and killing at least a few enemy champions will you have a chance to finally attack the structures located inside the base.

A game of League of Legends usually lasts between 20 and 35 minutes. The two teams constantly try to outdo each other and grow faster than their opponents. If a champion reaches level 10 while his counterpart is only at level 7, it creates a huge power gap that can be exploited to force favorable confrontations and achieve key objectives such as destroying a tower. Teams usually grow stronger once they gain a significant advantage, which is why early battles are very important.

If the opponent is ahead by more than 2-3 kills or more than 2 towers, it will be difficult to win the game. Two key elements of any LoL game are the Dragons and the Baron, located in the center of the map. These monsters are usually difficult to kill, spawn at intervals and offer important buffs to the team that kills them. For this reason, they usually represent hard-fought targets.

Graphics/ Aesthetics

The graphics, in my opinion, are really good. The League of Legends community is known for its fantastic cosplays and designs. The graphics are a bit cartoony, but not so much that they look like they were made for 6-year-olds. Each champion has his or her own portrait and a set of skins. Skins are basically a new color or different appearance of a champion, and some of them change the effects of his or her abilities. However, the “skins” are not essential in the game, as they do not give any advantage other than to brag about one’s appearance.

Team Roles

In League of Legends you can play 5 roles: Carry, Mid, Top, Jungler or Support. The first 4 roles tend to be involved in a lot of team kills, while the fifth has a different kind of job. Instead of nonstop farming and becoming very powerful, this champion makes sure his carry and midlaner are safe and can grow unhindered.

Playing as a Supporter requires a selfless attitude and a desire to see one’s team win the game, regardless of one’s personal experience. Supporters often feel insignificant in the middle and late stages of the game, but their impact is still extremely important. A wrong role can easily lead to the team’s defeat. The two most important roles are Mid and Carry. Players in these roles are usually the strongest and get the most kills over the course of the match. However, playing in these roles is not easy.

Ranks

In League of Legends there are many skill levels or divisions. When you start playing, you have to invest more than 100 hours to learn the basics, and you cannot play ranked matches. This is a very sophisticated game, with more than 1,000 notions to assimilate before you can launch into ranked battle. And when you finally do, you will be playing with people of your caliber.

The beauty of LoL is that the system is built in a way that allows you to level up based on your skill level. The stronger you become as a player, the more often you win and the higher you level up. For every win, you get LP points. For each defeat, you lose LP points. The goal is to win as often as possible.

Conclusion

Although you play on the same maps with similar items, the depth and strategy are such that no two League of Legends games are the same. The game’s distinctive style encourages surprise attacks and frequent use of skill-shot powers, while its colorful art style makes everything on the screen stand out.
