Why Can’t I Leave a Group Chat in Apple Messages?
In Apple Messages, there are two types of group chats: an iMessage group and an SMS/MMS group. The first group is made up of Apple users who exchange texts and media through Apple’s instant messaging service. The second group is made up of both Apple and non-Apple users.
Apple tells the difference between the two by giving iMessage groups blue speech bubbles and SMS/MMS groups green text bubbles. Even if everyone else in the group is an Apple user, you will be in an SMS/MMS group as long as at least one person is not an Apple user.
The kicker is that you can’t leave SMS/MMS groups because you’re not using an instant messaging platform. Instead, your carrier is the one who gets these messages.
FAQs
If the “Leave this Conversation” option is not shown, it means someone in the group text does not have iMessage on or isn’t running the latest version of iOS. If that’s the case, you won’t be able to leave the conversation. The workaround is either to delete the message or mute notifications by selecting “Hide Alerts.”
If Leave this Conversation is grayed out on your iPhone, there are only three participants in the iMessage conversation, and you can’t convert a three-person iMessage conversation to an iMessage between two people.
If you don’t see the “Leave this Conversation” option, someone in the discussion is not using iMessage, so you won’t be able to get the hell out. If you see the option but it’s grayed out and you can’t select it, this means that there are only three total participants in the group thread.
When turned off: messages sent to multiple recipients are sent as individual messages. message recipients can only reply to the sender; they can’t reply to the group or see the other message recipients.
