Choosing the 10 most popular Malayalam films in an industry whose veteran filmmakers like Priyadarshan have shot over 60 Malayalam films (many of which are classics) can create a conundrum for many Malaysian moviegoers.
This list is an attempt to compile the popular and independent movies I’ve seen over the years. It is not ranked in any particular order. Instead, I’m sticking with the work of filmmakers who have appeared in more than one film here. Please note that many filmmakers have created many masterpieces, but I have limited them to two per director. The idea is to include as many popular filmmakers as possible on this list and pique readers’ interest in exploring more of their work.

One of the best Malayalam movies of all time! It is about how Vijayan and Dasan played by Mohanlal and Sreenivasan survive against all odds to make a decent living. It has some of the most memorable scenes from the Mal movies, like the scene with Gafoor. You will never get tired of this “movie for the masses” humorously portraying the disasters that befall the middle class and how they ultimately outweigh all odds.
Mohanlal and Sreenivasan are raucous laughter riots where Srinivasan has an inferiority complex about his short dark PDC. Mohanlal hides his complex in a seemingly superior complex of being tall, handsome and top notch, Super!
Devasuram

A reasonably easy-to-watch movie that goes pretty bad towards the second half. Innocent is good as Neelakandan’s long-suffering servant.
