Philips Evnia 42M2N8900 review (2023) features and performance

Large color gamut and good color accuracy.

The Philips Evnia 42M2N8900 is the best mixed-use monitor ever used. It doesn’t have astronomical refresh rates or brightness levels that would put the sun to shame, but it does have dark OLED blacks, great colors, a large screen, and lightning-fast response times. The Evnia 42M2N8900 meets all my needs, whether we playing games on my console or gaming PC, getting work done on my laptop, or kicking back to watch a few episodes of the latest shows we can satiate-watch.

Philips Evnia 42M2N8900: Description

Out of the box, the colors are very bright and saturated, and the contrast has been enhanced digitally. This may not be to everyone’s taste, but we loved it. Luckily, the sRGB setting keeps the saturation and contrast in check, making for a very natural and accurate image. You can also still change the brightness in sRGB, which is something that other displays don’t do. The worst thing about this screen is that its maximum brightness is only about 185 cd/m2, and the steps between settings aren’t very even.

The settings range from 90 to 100, but the output is more like 70 to 100%. But even in bright light, the screen is easy to see thanks to a light-matte anti-glare coating that works well and self-illuminating pixels that give the screen high contrast and deep blacks. When you are in a dark room, the OLED screen from Philips really shines. The perfect blacks and individually lit pixels make it a great time to watch movies or play games.

Even though HDR content has a lower peak brightness, it still looks great because the Evnia can boost small parts of the screen (about 10%) up to 450 cd/m2. This makes short highlights stand out more, and there is no haloing around small points of light. SDR content is just as good, and the better contrast makes even the most boring content seem like something special.

The best thing about this screen, though, is that it’s great for gaming. Response times can be measured in fractions of a millisecond, which means the 42M2N8900 has no ghosting and is very responsive. Competitive gamers might like a smaller screen with a faster refresh rate, but unless you’re a pro-level head-popper, this screen should be fast enough for most gamers. When it comes to gaming, there is nothing wrong with the 42″ Evnia OLED.

Philips Evnia 42M2N8900: Design and Features

Philips Evnia 42M2N8900 review

The Evnia 42M2N8900 is big and heavy, which might seem like a given for a monitor with the number 42 in its name. With the stand, the package has dimensions of 932 x 689 x 359 mm and weighs 17.3 kg. Once it’s in place, the size and weight can still make it hard to plug things in or take them out. With all of the ports on the back facing down and only 190mm between them and a desk, it’s very hard to plug in your cables. From a usability standpoint, it would have been better if the ports were on one of the sides.

Because the panel is so wide, it’s not easy to get around to the back. Philips gives you a handy remote so that you don’t have to reach for the menu joystick. Even though it’s big, the Philips Evnia 42M2C8900 is a sleek and modern piece of equipment. Like the other displays in the Evnia sub-brand, it’s white instead of black, which is what most gaming monitors are. It looks very much like Alienware, and we can’t find anything wrong with it. As you would expect from a high-end monitor, the bezels are very thin, measuring only 5mm on the top and sides and 10mm at the bottom. The whole screen is laminated, so there is no plastic that looks bad.

By putting all of the electronics in the back of the two-section cabinet, Philips was able to make the display section only 20mm thick, which is very impressive. This makes the whole thing feel less bulky than it would if it had a normal one-piece cabinet. Most monitors this size have a hard time adjusting the weight. You can change the height by 120mm, swivel 20° to the left or right, and tilt from -5° to +15°, but you can’t do anything with the pivot.

If you want to mount the big Evnia to a wall or desk, Philips gives you a 100mm x 100mm VESA bracket with the same quick-release mount as the stand. The speakers have DTS Sound audio processing, but that doesn’t stop them from sounding a little loud when they are turned up to the max. At 80% or less volume, there is enough bass, treble, and balance to make listening very enjoyable.
