POCO X5 Pro 5G review: with 6.67-inch Super AMOLED display

It's bright, colorful, and offers such smooth and responsive frame rates that you almost feel like you're using a high-end device.

POCO is a brand of phones made by the Chinese company Xiaomi. It came out in 2018. POCO wants to offer high-end specs at a lower price than Xiaomi’s flagship devices, which makes them a good choice for people who want to save money. The brand’s best smartphones are the ones in the “POCO X” line. They have powerful processors, high refresh rate screens, big batteries, and nice designs. POCO has made many devices in India that are good deals for the price, and the POCO X5 Pro 5G is no exception.

POCO X5 Pro 5G: Description

The only problem is that the quality of the parts they use in their devices is not very good. Many POCO devices have had problems with their motherboards. I can’t say if that will happen with the POCO X5 Pro 5G; only time will tell. A couple of years ago, the Poco X3 Pro was a performance-focused smartphone like the Poco F1.

In 2022, however, the X4 Pro 5G was somehow made to be a device for everyone. If you ask us, that’s a big change of direction. But Poco has gone all “new year, new me” with the X5 Pro 5G, which is aimed at people who watch most of their videos on handheld devices. Even though that seems to be just one of their selling points, the company is still built on performance.

Design and Display

POCO X5 Pro 5G review

With a flat chassis and flat rear panel, the Poco X5 Pro 5G shares a lot of similarities with the Poco X4 Pro 5G in terms of structure. The Poco X5 Pro employs plastic instead of the previous model’s glass back plate on the back, though. The phone feels a lot lighter than its predecessor thanks to the polycarbonate cover.

Even though the Poco X5 Pro 5G weighs 181g, it seems lighter in your hand. The gadget is claimed to be the thinnest Poco smartphone in India with a 7.99mm thickness. The phone resembles the Redmi note 12 Pro 5G and note 12 Pro+ 5G smartphones from the back. The back panel of the Poco X5 Pro 5G in Horizon Blue that the manufacturer sent us features a frosted look. This does give the phone a somewhat more expensive appearance. Nonetheless, the upper part of the back panel has a shiny appearance. This design decision may or may not be liked by others. A large “Poco” logo is also present in the top-right corner, which somewhat resembles Realme’s “Dare to Jump” branding.

The 6.67-inch Super AMOLED display on the Poco X5 Pro 5G is tall and is believed to use chip-on-panel technology to keep the panel small. In comparison to the previous model, the bezels around the display are also a little bit slimmer. While the Poco X5 Pro 5G’s display does not have curved sides like the Realme 10 Pro+ 5G it does support HDR10 and Dolby Vision playback. Netflix and other video streaming services do make use of it.

Contrary to some reported concerns with earlier Poco (and Xiaomi) phones, the 10-bit panel delivers vibrant colours and deep blacks, and I did not detect any display issues like (green) tinting on my unit. The Dolby Atmos-compatible stereo speakers, which are equally superb, improve the multimedia experience. A 3.5mm headphone jack that supports Hi-Res audio is also present.

POCO X5 Pro 5G review: Camera

POCO X5 Pro 5G review

To help users provide sharp photographs, the Poco X5 Pro 5G sports three rear camera sensors. The company employed a 108MP primary lens with an f/1.9 aperture, followed by an 8MP secondary lens with an f/2.2 aperture and a 120-degree field of view. A 2MP macro lens with an f/2.4 aperture makes up the third sensor. As we could see, the primary lens’s photographs were fairly detailed and kept a good balance of colour and contrast. The three rear camera sensors utilized by the Poco X5 Pro 5G keep details in the appropriate proportions even in low light. Image courtesy of Haider Ali Khan

We believe that the 108MP lens is significantly superior to the default camera setting because it is able to capture broad angles and has a high contrast level. Sharp details can be captured well with the ultrawide lens as well. The ultra-wide photos’ detailing was captured in a very distinct manner, taking into account every aspect. The background was nicely divided from the face photographs, which were good, but occasionally, in our opinion, the differences were not sufficiently evident.

Nighttime photography preserved details in an appropriate proportion. We occasionally thought that the exposure was a little too bright. For sharp, accurate colour and shadow capture, we advise using the night mode. The phone has a 16MP selfie lens with an aperture of f/2.4 for taking selfies. The captured selfies were in-depth with no additional AI tweaks that altered the skin tone or overly enhanced them.

POCO X5 Pro 5G review: Battery life

POCO X5 Pro 5G review

The POCO X5 Pro, thankfully, has a 5,000mAh battery, so I didn’t have to rush to plug it in at the end of the day. The gadget kept me company for around 1.5 days with moderate use. A complete charge from scratch takes roughly 45 minutes thanks to the included 67W turbo-charger. A simple 20-minute charge was all I needed when I was pressed for time to get another 5 to 6 hours of use.

Price and availability

POCO X5 Pro 5G review

From February 7, the Poco X5 Pro 5G will cost 1,549 AED and come in Black, Blue, and Yellow, with one 8GB+256GB version you can buy this smartphone directly from amazon.

Final Words

The POCO X5 Pro 5G is the kind of phone that makes you wonder, “What’s the catch?” First of all, it’s not a big step up from the POCO X4 Pro, which came out in April 2022. Also, it looks an awful lot like the Redmi Note 12 Pro, which came out last month. Despite that, there isn’t much wrong with this mid-ranger.

At its price, it has a bright screen, a battery that lasts a long time, and a processor that works well. Even though the mid-range market is getting more crowded and competitive, the only person who stands to gain from this is the consumer.
