PS4 vs Xbox One 2024: review, specs, features, pros and cons

If you want to buy a video game console, you have more options than ever before. Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X show that console gaming is one of the most popular hobbies on the planet. Of course, you’ll usually have to pay more to own one, which begs the question: what about the cheaper options? Sony and Microsoft aren’t ready to give up on the PS4 or Xbox One just yet, which is good news.

Both consoles will still be able to play the newest games for a while longer, which makes them a great choice for gamers who like to save money. And then there are the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, which are upgraded versions of their base consoles that can do things like play 4K HDR video. Even so, these super-powered consoles aren’t much cheaper than their next-gen counterparts. You might also want to play games on the go. Both the Nintendo Switch and Switch Lite are very popular and shouldn’t be missed.

In this article, however, we’ll ignore the next-generation powerhouses, “Pro” and “X” machines, and Nintendo Switch consoles and just compare the PS4 (also known as the PS4 Slim) and Xbox One S. We’ll compare both machines in every way possible, from specs and exclusive games to multiplayer services and, of course, the all-important price.

Before talking about the console’s hardware, controllers, and operating systems, you have to talk about the games, which are what really matter the most. The switch to next-gen consoles isn’t done yet, which is good news. There are still new games coming out for the PS4 and Xbox One S, like Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla and Cyberpunk 2077, and they will keep coming out for the foreseeable future.

PS4 vs Xbox One Design

PS4 vs Xbox One

The Xbox One S is better than the original Xbox One because it is much lighter and doesn’t have a big power brick. Instead, it has an internal power supply. It’s 11.6 by 8.9 by 2.5 inches and, unlike the previous version, comes with a 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray player. If your TV can handle it, it can even upgrade 1080p games to 4K you can buy PS4 product directly from Playstation’s website.

But if you want a simpler version of the Xbox One S, you might like the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition better. The 1TB console looks and works the same as its predecessor, but it doesn’t have a disc drive, so you can’t play Blu-ray or physical discs on it. Even though the Xbox One X is bigger than the Xbox One S, it’s still a lot smaller than the first Xbox One. It measures 11.81 by 9.44 by 2.36 inches and weighs about 8.4 pounds (this console also has an internal power supply).

This is the most powerful Xbox One. It can play games in native 4K and plays 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray movies. Starting with the PS4, the PS4 Slim is the smallest of the major consoles on the market right now. Its dimensions are 10.4 x 11.3 x 1.5 inches, and most people use it as their main PS4 instead of the original PlayStation 4. It doesn’t have 4K resolutions, not even for video, but it can still play all of the PS4’s games.

PS4 vs Xbox One Interface

The Xbox One’s interface looks a lot like the newer computer operating system Windows 8. You can use the controller, Kinect, or voice commands to move around the interface. Apps can be “snapped” on Xbox One, which means you can have an app window open on screen while you play you can buy Xbox One product directly from Xbox’s website.

The PS4 has a “dynamic” menu system that lets you choose games, look at your profile, see what’s going on in social media, and more. The PS4 has a big new feature that lets you record your gameplay and share it online. This is easy to do by pressing a button on the controller. Xbox One has a similar service, but only for people who pay for Xbox Live gold.

PS4 vs Xbox One Cameras

When the PS4 and Xbox One first came out, their cameras were seen as one of the most important parts of the machines. But in the years that followed, both the Kinect from Microsoft and the PS Camera from Sony have lost their popularity. The latter got a new lease on life when it became an important part of the PSVR ecosystem, but it is almost never used in any other way.

That’s too bad, because the new Kinect technology seemed very promising. It could track up to six skeletons at once and process 2GB of data per second. It could also read heart rates, facial expressions, and the movement of 25 joints, including the thumb. The camera’s field of view is 60% bigger than the Xbox 360 Kinect’s, which got rid of the annoying “stand 6 feet away” error messages we got before.

Kinect for Xbox One was powerful, but it needed more games. Since the whole platform has been shut down, there aren’t many reasons to keep the 1080p camera plugged in right now. At this point, the PlayStation camera doesn’t have as much to offer, but it’s hard to find. It used to be called the PlayStation Eye.

It has two cameras with a resolution of 1,280 by 800 pixels and a body that is thinner than the Kinect. Since the console came out, the robot minigame The Playroom has been updated, but other than the Just Dance series, there isn’t much else that needs the device.

PS4 vs Xbox One Controllers

PS4 vs Xbox One

The standard Xbox One controller is similar to the 360 controller in many ways, but it has two more rumble motors and doesn’t have a big battery pack on the back. The thumb pads on the analogue sticks are also smaller, which some people will find refreshing and others frustrating. Microsoft also made a version of its controller called “Elite,” which can be customized in many ways and has multiple triggers for different inputs. Even though the Elite controller is very cool, it costs a huge $180. Unless you are the toughest of the tough, you probably won’t need it.

On the other hand, the DualShock 4 is much better in every way than the DualShock controllers that came before it. It’s bigger and has triggers that curve outward, a touchpad on the front that you can click, and a lightbar that can be used for different things. The controller even has a small speaker that some games use very well. The thumb pads are bigger than the ones on the Xbox controller, but that’s just because the controller is bigger. Overall, the PS4 controller feels a bit more sturdy and will fit most gamers’ hands better. It’s only by a small amount, but it’s still a win.

PS4 vs Xbox One Performance and graphics

PS4 vs Xbox One

On paper, the specs for the PS4 and Xbox One are the same. They use a custom 8-core x86-64 AMD Jaguar processor with 8GB of RAM and an AMD Radeon GPU to handle graphics. The 500GB transitional spinning disc drive is used by both consoles.

Despite these specs, however, the PS4 is better at putting its power to use than the Xbox One. That’s because Microsoft’s game console uses some of its power to run the operating system. This leaves it with less power to use for games. So, some games on the Xbox One have a resolution of 900p, while games on the PS4 have a resolution of 1080p, which is Full HD. So the PS4 is better if you want the sharpest graphics from the last generation.

But when you compare the Xbox One X to the PS4 Pro, this is the other way around. Microsoft’s console usually aims for a native 4K output, while Sony’s powered-up PS4 used a technique called “checkerboard rendering” to take images with a lower resolution and scale them up to 4K instead of aiming for native 4K. Check out our article on the Xbox One X vs PS4 Pro face-off for a full breakdown of how these two consoles compare.

Which one should you consider?

It may seem strange to pick the best console from the last generation, but since games are still being made for them, they are far from being useless. In the end, the PS4 wins because it has more games that are only available on it. But you can’t go wrong with an Xbox One S, especially when you add Xbox Game Pass, which is a ridiculously good deal.

If you don’t have a PS4 but do have an Xbox One, it’s still worth getting Sony’s last-gen console, especially if you can find it for a good price. The same is true if you have an Xbox One but not a PS4. Overall, there is a winner, but it’s pretty much you, the console gamer.

FAQs

“Sony has sold more than twice as many Xbox consoles as Microsoft in the last generation,” Microsoft says, translating from Portuguese.

Which gaming console is best?

The PS5 is the best plug-and-play gaming platform because it loads games quickly, has a new controller, and has a great lineup of games, including fan favourites and new exclusives.
