Realme GT Neo 3 review (2023) with large and good quality display

The GT Neo 3 is fast, with 150W of charging power and a flagship chipset.

The Realme GT Neo 3 150W is a mid-range smartphone with a number of features that make it stand out from the crowd. These include a 120Hz AMOLED display, a high-quality main camera, and a 150W charger that, according to the company, can charge the phone from dead to half full in just five minutes.

Realme GT Neo 3: Description

For a smartphone that costs £599, those specs sound like they belong in the flagship category. “61 markets worldwide, including Asia, Europe, Oceania, Middle and East Africa, etc.” is what Realme, formerly a sub-brand of Oppo, boasts. You can find some unlocked models of the company’s phones online, despite the fact that they are not officially sold in the US.

According to Realme, the GT Neo series’s backplate was inspired by the world of racing. After initially finding the lime-green Realme GT Neo 2 “somewhat alarming,” we have grown rather fond of it over the past year. Our review unit was blue on the back with two white vertical stripes that were interrupted by the camera bump, the Realme logo, and the slogan “Dare to Leap.” Gone is last year’s lime green livery. This shade is known by Realme as Nitro Blue.

Realme GT Neo 3: Design

Realme GT Neo 3 review

The design of the Realme GT Neo 3 is similar to that of the Realme GT Neo 2. Among the modifications are a new coating for the rear panel, a reorganization of the camera sensors, and a centered hole-punch cutout for the front-facing camera. Instead of the GT Neo 2’s flashy dual-tone rear glass panel, Realme has opted for a simpler AG glass with a matte finish, which unfortunately attracts a lot of fingerprints.

The GT Neo 3 has a nicer in-hand feel and looks more premium than its sibling, the OnePlus 10R, which I reviewed previously. Even though it weighs only 188 grams, it’s still too big to be used with a single hand. Its big screen, protected by Gorilla Glass 5, attracts fingerprints but is easily wiped clean. The premium look is accentuated by the thin bezels surrounding the hole-punch AMOLED screen.

The Realme GT Neo 3 has a polycarbonate frame in the middle. The front panel, like the back, has a matte finish that makes the phone difficult to hold. Realme thoughtfully bundles a tinted, transparent TPU case that provides excellent grip and still allows the phone’s stunning design to shine through.

Display and Audio

Realme GT Neo 3 review

The screen on the GT Neo 3 isn’t the best available, but it’s also not the worst. The 6.7-inch display is OLED, has a 120Hz refresh rate, and is HDR10+ compatible. In use, it presents as highly polished. The 120Hz refresh rate really shows off in the silky smoothness of the on-screen animations and the vividness of the colors.

The GT Neo 3 may lack the curved edges and dynamic LTPO refresh rates and improved peak brightness of more expensive phones, but for the vast majority of users, it will be more than adequate. There’s a fingerprint scanner built right into the screen, and it’s been working perfectly.

The stereo speakers on the phone are essentially the same. Although the sound quality isn’t the best, the fact that this phone even supports stereo sound is remarkable given the low price. The lack of a standard headphone jack is par for the course these days.

Software and Performance

My reactions to Realme’s software are conflicted. While I appreciate Realme’s streamlined, feature-rich user interface, I’m not a fan of the company’s spammy push notifications from pre-installed apps. Realme needs these bloatware apps to make the GT Neo 3 profitable, but they need to find a way to mitigate the negative effects of notifications on the user experience.

At the time of this review’s writing, my phone has more than a dozen unused applications vying for real estate in the notification shade. Fortunately, you can uninstall most of these programs.

The GT Neo 3 is powered by an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 8100 5G SoC, which is comparable to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset in terms of performance. Four high-performance Cortex-A78 cores and four low-power Cortex-A55 cores (both clocked at 2GHz) make up the chipset. The integrated Mali-G610 MC6 graphics processor takes care of everything visually.

Camera and Video

It’s safe to say that the GT Neo 3’s camera isn’t its strong suit because it is not the phone’s primary focus. That’s not to say the camera work is terrible; it’s just not great. The primary camera is impressive. This optically stabilized camera uses a 50 megapixel Sony IMX766 sensor, and its results are nearly indistinguishable from those of premium smartphones in bright light.

The OIS allows it to perform well even when the lighting is poor. It becomes more apparent at night that this is not a flagship-grade camera, but whether you use the regular shooting mode or the dedicated night mode, you will get shots that are good enough to share on social media, even if they are not pixel-perfect.

With an 8-megapixel ultrawide, performance suffers slightly. This works reasonably well during the day, though it lacks the sharpness and vibrant colors of the primary camera. Don’t use it unless absolutely necessary because nighttime performance suffers due to the smaller sensor and lack of stabilization.

Realme GT Neo 3: Battery Life

So far, Realme has been consistently competent, but the Realme GT Neo 3’s battery is a rare hardware error. This model of the phone only comes with a 4,500mAh battery. It should be noted that a variant with a significantly larger 5000mAh battery is available in some regions. We’ll get to the payoff in due time, but for now, let’s just say that we are not convinced it’s worthwhile.

The Realme GT Neo 3’s battery life is respectable rather than spectacular. We found that the Neo 3’s battery life dropped to around 35–40% after a typical 16-hour day with slightly more than 3 hours of screen-on time.

That’s certainly not cause for alarm, but it is not out of the ordinary for a well-optimized Android phone with a 5000mAh battery to reach 50% or higher under similar conditions. This compromise is made possible by the western model’s provision of fast 150W charging. Charging power in other regions is 80W.

Rapid charging is not ideal for those who are worried about battery life or excessive heat because it must be activated manually in the Settings menu. When turned on, we experienced a remarkable 15-minute full charge of the phone’s battery. However, the 80W version charges to capacity in slightly over 30 minutes, which is hardly a slow time. If we had our choice, we would have much rather had the extra strength.

Wireless charging is another feature you won’t have access to. Google’s Pixel 6 offers wireless charging for the same price as its flagship counterparts, which is not a feature typically included in devices with lower specifications.

Price and Availability

Realme GT Neo 3 review

In the United Kingdom, the Realme GT Neo 3 in its lone 12GB/256GB configuration will retail for £599 (approximately $750 / AU$1,040). The Realme GT Neo 3 undercuts the iPhone XS and the Samsung Galaxy S22 by a significant margin in the UK at its current price, and it goes head-to-head with the Pixel 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE at their current prices you can buy this product directly from Realme’s store.

Final words

In spite of its impressive hardware, the Realme GT Neo 3’s software leaves much to be desired. If some bugs are fixed, and if popular Android games and apps are optimized for the GT Neo 3, then it’s a no-brainer to buy this phone. If you’re willing to spend a little less, you can get an equally good alternative that undercuts the price of the flagship model.

FAQs

Is GT Neo 3 camera good?

In addition to the primary sensor, there is also a wide-angle camera with 8 megapixel resolution. Minimal edge distortion has been achieved by Realme, and the secondary camera’s colors are faithfully reproduced. If you only take landscape photos occasionally, this sensor will suffice.

Which Realme GT is best?

The Realme GT Neo 3T, the most expensive of the series, costs $25,749. The Realme GT Neo 3T has a 32-megapixel front-facing camera, a 64-megapixel primary rear camera with an f/1.8 lens, and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide angle camera with an f/2.3 lens. If you want to compare the features of two different mobile phones, you can do so by viewing a detailed comparison.
