Samsung has taken durability seriously with the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The screen is now 80% more resistant than that of the Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Flip 5G thanks to a new film. Gorilla Glass Victus covers the 1.9-inch display and Samsung has made the phone’s frame out of its Armor Aluminum material. All of this provides improved scratch resistance, especially on the cover display. The Flip 3 is also IPX8 waterproof.

That means you don’t have to submerge it in water, although neither I nor Samsung would recommend that. We weren’t able to test the water resistance during our hands-on experience with the phone. The cover display is probably the biggest change to the design of the Galaxy Z Flip 3. It’s four times the size of the Galaxy Z Flip’s 1.1-inch display, which means you can see a lot more information than before.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is available in four colors: cream, green, lavender and phantom black. The lavender color particularly caught our eye during our hands-on test and illustrates the Flip 3’s focus on style. Samsung will also offer the gray, pink and white colors exclusively on its website. I tested the cream-colored model and it is very nice in its simplicity. The smooth surface is also very pleasant considering how slippery the original Galaxy Z Flip was.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the best foldable flip phone on the market, although that’s not saying much considering the phone’s only competitor is the aging Motorola Razr 2020. The phones have different approaches to the form factor: the Razr has more features on the outer screen, while the Z Flip 3 allows the phone to unfold to some degree (until it’s completely flat), with more features in the half-unfolded stages.

Unfolding the Z Flip 3 is a bit difficult with one hand (as with previous Z Flip phones), but that resistance means you can unfold the device to any degree and rely on it to stay locked in place, which is as functional as it is fun. There are probably few use cases that require the Z Flip 3 to be partially unfolded, at least until more apps include a screen-sharing feature (called Flex mode), but this option elevates some experiences beyond what regular phones are capable of. Video chats are much better when you can prop the phone up; the same goes for selfies.
