The Asus TUF Gaming A15 has been around for a few years, but Asus has never been satisfied with its most affordable gaming notebook – the company has continued to refine the design and beef up the internals. The 2022 model has received faster components and more sophisticated display options in a chassis that is lighter than the older unit.
We found one of the most compelling gaming notebooks in recent memory with the Asus TUF A15. However, it’s not exciting for the typical reasons that usually accompany a new gaming device. It’s not equipped with the top-of-the-line components that power the best gaming PCs. Nor is it as flashily equipped as Asus’ Zephyrus gaming laptops, which are also very powerful. In fact, the Asus TUF A15 is a pretty standard-looking gaming laptop.
The Asus TUF A15 (also known as the Asus F506IV) stands out from the crowd by offering great performance, powered by the solid Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU and AMD Ryzen 4000 mobile CPUs that seriously impressed us, in a gaming laptop whose quality of performance comes with a very reasonable price.
The 15.6-inch chassis of the Asus TUF Gaming A15 means Asus has room for a number pad, and the keyboard has fast, crisp, and quiet keys. They’re good enough for mainstream gaming, and they’re crisper than the Nitro’s soft keys. That’s not to say the A15’s keyboard is perfect. The keys wobble a bit, and the underlying plastic is soft; more expensive units feel sturdier than you might expect.
The layout isn’t that great either: you do get a number pad and additional audio keys, but you have to make do with small cursor keys and a return key at one height. And although you get RGB LEDs, it’s single-zone lighting without much customization. The trackpad is large enough, but the keys are soft and uneven. Even for casual gamers, a USB mouse is better.
