Save $200 on Sony Xperia 1 IV at Best Buy

The Sony Xperia 1 IV is the company’s latest flagship smartphone for 2022 and is now available in three different colors – black, ice white and purple. The most important new feature of this year’s update is an innovative optical telephoto lens. The third camera module offers both an 85mm and 125mm telephoto focal length, and what’s even better is that you can seamlessly zoom back and forth between them.

Your eyes and your hand will tell you the same thing about the Sony Xperia 1 IV: it’s a long, thin, angular smartphone that won’t win any design awards – especially not the “biggest redesign of its predecessor” award.

Measuring 165 x 71 x 8.2 mm, the phone is large but slim enough not to overwhelm the hand, and at 185 g it is also quite light. It’s not entirely comfortable in the hand, as the flat edges make the phone quite angular, but at least it’s not as wide as many other smartphones we’ve seen.

As with most premium phones, the device is a glass sandwich with the tough Gorilla Glass Victus on the front and back and a metal frame. It has both IP65 and IP68 certification, so it’s well protected against dust and brief immersion in water. You can purchase the device in purple, white or black.

If you like extra ports and buttons on your smartphone, the Xperia 1 IV is for you. Not only does it have a USB-C port, but it’s also one of the few premium smartphones in recent years with a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired audio and microphones. It also has a small volume rocker, a power button with an integrated fingerprint scanner, and a small camera shutter button.

We’re big fans of this camera tool – pressing it while in the camera app takes a picture, but pressing it lets you find focus, just like a real camera. And pressing it when the screen is off opens the camera app, so you can quickly take a few snapshots.

We can’t say as much praise about the fingerprint scanner, though, because it is incredibly capricious. It often could not find our fingerprint, sometimes gave one of several error messages, and sometimes said nothing at all. This is despite the fact that we registered our fingerprint several times to increase the likelihood that it would work.

The Sony Xperia 1 IV has mostly the same display as its Mark 3 predecessor, which means it’s a 6.5-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 4K resolution, and 21:9 aspect ratio, and as always, it looks pretty good.

Most of the time, the Xperia display doesn’t reach 4K resolution – that’s not a big deal, because you don’t need to see your horribly compressed Instagram pictures in that aspect ratio, and that would drain the battery quickly – but that high resolution comes into play when you’re playing games or watching higher-resolution videos, which makes for a great viewing experience.

You may be asking yourself, “6.5 inches? Isn’t that pretty small?”, and it’s true that most high-end Android smartphones exceed that size on paper – but because of the phone’s thin and long aspect ratio, it doesn’t feel that much smaller.

The main improvement over the last-generation Xperia is the brightness of the display – Sony claims the IV is 50% brighter than its predecessor. That’s true, and it was easier to see the phone’s screen in bright outdoor environments than in previous versions of the phone – but we’d argue it still wasn’t bright enough.
