Samsung adds the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2, a pair of active noise cancellation (ANC) earbuds that share many similarities with the successful Galaxy Buds Pro line, to its line of wireless earbuds. The Buds 2 were Samsung’s first earphones to include an earbud fit test and use Bluetooth 5.2.

The Galaxy Buds 2 have a similar design to the original Galaxy Buds Pro, with a rounded earbud shape without silicone wing tips. Each earbud weighs only five grams. Still, stabilizing wingtips would have been a good option for athletes who want to take advantage of IPX2 water resistance. Why Samsung refuses to return to the better fit of the Buds Plus design is a mystery, as the Buds Plus are still the most comfortable earbuds on the market.

Like the previous Galaxy Buds, the Buds 2 are packed with high-tech sensors, including a proximity sensor to automatically detect your ears. When you remove both earbuds, music playback pauses. To resume playback, you must tap either earbud; music playback will not automatically resume when you plug the buds back in. The touch controls are effective and intuitive, but the touchpads often register accidental touches, a problem that also occurs with older Samsung headphones.

The Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 have a standard, consumer-friendly frequency response that mimics that of the Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus and Pro. Bass and treble are boosted, bringing out the beloved “oomph” of kick drums without obscuring details of high notes like cymbal hits and vocal harmonies. Samsung doesn’t overdo it with the tuning of the Galaxy Buds 2, and these earphones should make almost any genre of music sound pleasant.

You get access to the latest Bluetooth 5.2 firmware and can choose between three Bluetooth codecs: SBC, AAC, and Samsung Scalable Codec for consistently high audio quality for iPhones and Samsung devices. It is true that all Android phones support AAC, but the performance varies on Android depending on the hardware.

Samsung says the Galaxy Buds 2 last five hours with noise cancellation enabled. With the charging case, you can listen to ANC for another 15 hours. If you put the earbuds in the case for just five minutes, you get 60 minutes of playtime. While this is disappointing, the microphone quality is easily improved with a firmware update.
