Summary

Stranded: Alien Dawn is a well-focused survival game with decisions that have meaningful and lasting effects. It could use a few more scenarios, but what's offered will keep you busy for dozens of hours, and that's just your first playthrough.

Stranded: Alien Dawn is the latest game from Haemimont Games, the same company that made Tropico 3, 4, and 5, Surviving Mars, Victor Vran, Jagged Alliance 3, and more. It was published by Frontier as part of their Frontier Foundry program. Stranded: Alien Dawn is a mix of many tried-and-true ideas from those other games. It has elements of base building, farming, managing resources, surviving, and even tower defense-style combat, as well as crafting, exploring, and even taking care of animals.

Stranded: Alien Dawn: Description

It’s a celebration of a genre that Haemimont does well, so we was excited to see how my previous hands-on previews had changed after almost a year in Early Access. As the name suggests, the game starts with my crew hurtling toward the surface of an unknown planet in a ship that is broken and on fire. Three of my crew quickly got out of the wreckage and started looking for useful things right away, but a fourth member had a breakdown right away.

One of my team members saw this and went over to comfort them after this obsessed event. Now that everyone was calm, my whole team went to figure out how they could live in a dangerous place without any tools or hope. Since your ship is more of a landing craft than a colony ship, it doesn’t have much that will help you right away. we was able to make a simple shelter by taking pieces of metal from the wreckage. It would stop the rain, but not much else. When it gets cold, this just won’t work. When one of my crew members went back to the wreckage, they were able to find some emergency food, but it wouldn’t last forever.

Stranded: Alien Dawn: Crash and learn

Stranded: Alien Dawn review

In Stranded: Alien Dawn, there are a few different ways to start. You can play as a small group of soldiers setting up a military base, where they must build a powerful communication station and then defend it from swarms of alien bugs. In another scenario, you can set up an outpost on a frontier planet and start trading with ships in orbit, hoping to make enough money to buy the whole planet. But the best scenario is the one that feels most like a real story of survival. It starts with a crash landing, and your survivors are standing around the burning wreckage of their spaceship.

Most of the time, a few of them do what comes naturally: they get on their knees and start crying. But soon you’ll be able to put everyone to work. The first hours and days are busy as you keep them busy cutting down trees, mining stone, planting crops, observing alien plants and animals, and collecting scrap metal from the crash. Keep your people fed, warm by the fire, and safe from the elements and bugs, and you will soon be able to move them out of their small, crude shelters and into a proper base with modern technology.

Keeping track of the crew is hard and requires a lot of attention: Each survivor has different skill levels for things like fighting, building, making things, and so on, and many of them start at zero. After all, they were astronauts, so what did they know about farming or building? They also have good and bad personality traits that affect their happiness and productivity and that of the people around them. This can be useful, like when someone is so good at making things that others can learn by watching them.

Stranded: Alien Dawn: Lost in Space

Stranded: Alien Dawn review

All survival and crafting games start with basically nothing. The player’s character has to look for materials while taking care of basic needs like eating, drinking, and sleeping. After playing for a few hours, they moved up the tech tree and made weapons, armor, and homes. we think a lot more. Stranded: Alien Dawn uses the same format, but instead of starting with just one character, you start with a group of survivors. Your spaceship has crashed on an alien planet, and you and your crew have to build a place to live, find food, and start to take back the land.

Since you live in a technological society, you do have some advanced tools to start with. You aren’t making weapons out of sharp sticks. Like Rimworld, your party isn’t made up of random characters. Instead, it’s made up of people with very distinct personalities that you need to think about. They vary in how much they are scared, brave, bored, suspicious, or friendly. You can give them any task, but some are better at achieving certain goals. The emotional health of your people is just as important as their physical health. Final Words

Whether being cut off from civilization is your dream or your worst nightmare, Stranded: Alien Dawn lets you build a base as hunter-gatherers, rediscover technology and make a successful escape, or set up a rough military base. It needs a little more work on the console controls and user interface, but it does a good job of making a sci-fi version of the survival management sim genre.
