Terra Nil review 2024: exploring game’s mechanics and gameplay

impressively good at getting his message across through mechanics.

At first, there is nothing but cracked brown earth in front of you. In Terra Nil, it’s up to you to fix up this land with toxic soil and dried-up riverbeds. But players are given a satisfyingly easy way to do what seems like a hard job. All they have to do is put a windmill on a stone surface, and it will power machines. No matter if you are restoring a continental zone, a polar zone, or a piece of tropical rainforest, the toxin scrubber and the irrigator are very important.

Terra Nil: Description

The scrubber cleans the area around it, making it ready for new life to grow. The irrigator gives the area the moisture it needs to get this process going, at least until you have the tools to make it rain. Once you dump a polyp collector into the ocean, it will grow a coral reef full of crustaceans, mollusks, and anything else with a shell. Easy-to-recycle atomic reactors bring heat and electricity to places where a windmill can’t do the job.

Recycling is also an important part of the process, as is bringing back animals from the area. When you’re done fixing up a place, you have to leave, which means you have to clean up after yourself. Every piece of equipment you put down needs to be picked up before it can be used to make the airship you will leave on.

Replayability and Exploration

Terra Nil review

Terra Nil is a game that can be played more than once, and each time you play it, you’ll find new challenges and ways to explore. Players can try out different strategies and see how their choices affect the ecosystem. There are also secrets and Easter eggs to find, which make the game more fun to play again and again.

Terra Nil: Natural Processes

Terra Nil does a great job of getting its message across through its mechanics. A beautiful illustrated notebook teaches you about systems and helps you notice the beauty of the natural world. You could try to force your way to success by covering the whole map with a grid of scrubbers and irrigators, but it’s much better to just help nature along.

A few carefully placed Cloud Seeders near bodies of water won’t do much at first, but the rising humidity will start natural rains again, which will clean the whole map if you’re willing to sit back and enjoy the rainy ASMR vibes for a while.

That’s where I found the most fun in Terra Nil. Just finishing each mission became pretty easy (though I could have made things harder by limiting resources and making choices more important), but it was always satisfying to find the tricks in each environment that would get nature to do the heavy lifting.

If a water pump is well-placed on a hill, it can fill many rivers and lakes. A controlled wildfire can make a whole forest more fertile. You’re not building a base; instead, you’re getting natural processes going and maybe learning a little bit about how these environments were made in the first place.

Visually stunning and relaxing soundtrack

The graphics and music in Terra Nil are the first things that players will notice about the game. The game has beautiful, hand-drawn graphics that are both detailed and cute. The music and sound effects are also very good. They make the game feel calm and real, which makes it fun to play.

Straightforward gameplay with challenging puzzles

The game play of Terra Nil is simple but difficult. Players must find the places that need to be fixed up and use their resources wisely to plant trees, make ponds, and build structures that can support life. The game encourages players to try out different ways to play and different strategies. It also rewards creativity and the ability to solve problems.

Terra Nil: Performance

If you look at the game’s video settings, there are only three options: Resolution, Fullscreen, and Vsync. At first, Terra Nil worked well enough that none of these had to be changed. However, when the world started to grow, this changed in a big way. The frame rate would start to slow down and the battery life would drain quickly.

After some testing, I found that it mostly depended on how much land you were looking at at once. More power was needed the farther away you were. Logically, this makes sense since you can see a lot more on your screen, but I’ve seen some games that lower the quality the more you zoom out to fix this problem.

Keeping this in mind, I decided to change the resolution to 1152×720 and upscale through SteamOS by using FSR. Even though the game looked a little sharper, the stability it gave was just enough to make the change worth it so I could keep the TDP limit at 8.

Overall, with these settings and a refresh rate and FPS cap of 40, I was able to keep an average drain of 13W to 15W with a good amount of stability. This depends on how much of the world can be seen, but I’ve found that 4-5 RB presses from the camera that is zoomed in the most works best.

Final Words

Terra Nil is a beautiful and fun strategy game that makes you feel calm and lets you do something different than in other games like it. Being able to fix the world instead of destroy and rule it is so different from what usually happens, and I couldn’t love it more for that.

Even though it doesn’t work with a controller, the game feels great. And even though I need to zoom in more to keep the battery drain down and the framerate steady, it didn’t ruin my time on the Steam Deck. This is a great game to play on the Deck if you don’t mind moving a cursor around.
