the foreigner

Rating: 4.5/5

“The Outsider” is a story about faith. Stephen King’s 2018 novel centers on a small-town detective whose job requires him to find concrete answers to real-world mysteries, then assigns him an impossible case he can’t explain: supernatural possibilities. Not without consideration.

King asks the same of his readers, to believe in the unbelievable, keeping the novel so gloriously short as to justify his own request. Perhaps the Master of Horror has been writing about ghosts and demons for so long that he no longer feels the need to explain to anyone that believing in a boogeyman is a reasonable and rational choice, but book two is quite the opposite. It tries to combine genres – speculative fiction and true crime – without respecting the fundamentals of the two.

Taboo

Rating: 4.5/5

Taboo is a gothic conspiracy thriller about the evil committed by servants of the British Empire, and the story of a mysterious man with other abilities. It is an antidote to the bloodthirsty hood and gang vision of Regency England, made popular by the Jane Austen adaptation, and trades that sterile atmosphere for a London full of filth, corruption and violence. More than anything, though, this is an eight-episode excuse for Tom Hardy to growl in a top hat.
